Forgot about this so was surprised that this is out today. Reviews seem positive and glad to see they kept lot of merc interactions from the previous titles. Little disappointed there's no online shop to order the gear from but this could be a good thing as it will force people to use whatever they can get their hands on and have ammo for. Modding tools should be out "soon" which should be great for the game's longevity. Looking forward to what modders will do, something along the lines of JA2 1.13 will be fantastic.

GF is going out tonight so I actually pre-purchased the game to play tonight without any distractions :)

Did they say when?

I do love a turn based strategy...

Mod for hit chance? It's already on Steam workshop, was released even before the game unlocked.

Do you keep the same team? Or do they die and you have to select a replacement?

You hire mercs for certain length of time. 3 days min and 14 day max. You can offer them extension but they may refuse and leave at the end of the initial contact. Some mercs may flat out refuse to sign if they don't get on with another Merc or ask for more money. If they die you'll have to hire a replacement.

looks interesting. Is it mission based? its a little hard to tell from the video. if so how long does one take?

It's one long campaign, you have to keep moving and securing more areas, training militias in strategic or important places.

looks right up my street this, is it similar to x com games ?

Kinda, you have a squad (can have multiple), travel across the map fighting enemies and complete tasks. You don't have a base as such. To complete the main story you need to make sure to have a steady income so need to liberate settlements, especially mines, train militia there to get loyalty up and thus maximise the income you get from them. Combat is like the modern xcom games which not many of us old school guys are too happy about. :D

Finally freed the little island. Found the map with the bunker the hardest.

Well, I'm now properly hooked. Played over 20 hours of it this weekend.

Once you get the hang of the combat, how to prepare a stealth attack, how to overwatch, and using the keyboard shortcuts, it really flows and becomes quite an incredible experience. The storylines are interesting, the strategic map controls are excellent, but the combat shines through here - really solid. Nothing better than exploding someone's head with a sniper rifle at maximum range. I haven't even started crafting weapons or parts yet - looking forward to pimping out some silent rifles.

This is a true worthy successor to JA2.

Setting up overwatch before the combat start is so good. You can put a suppressor onto the basic bolt action rifle (keep forgetting the name) with just the parts and if you have a lens make the scope that increases the crit chance. It's a game changer, when you load into an area go round with your sniper and pick out single enemies from distance. Just make sure no one is around to see them die. Other patrolling enemies may trigger alarm when they see the dead body, not always though, so you may get dragged into combat even if your squad is already half way across the map. :) I managed to clear out the first mine without even triggering the combat. Couple of well placed grenades, supressed rifle and none of them had a chance to react.

Noticed last night that there's now a mod for enemies to drop all their gear, just like in the previous JA titles. I'm hesitant to install it, as much as I was disappointed they removed it from the game I'm not sure if it's a good idea with the new crafting system.

What team did people start with?

I took Kalyna even though she's down as mechanic I use her as sniper, especially at night since she has Night Ops.

Livewire as the main mechanic and back up medic, usually stays at the back and provides overwatch to cover flanking

MD as main doctor since he's cheap. He's actually learning shooting pretty quickly and is almost at 80 after couple of weeks. Was planning on replacing him but now he's a decent shot I'm not so sure.

Barry to throw grenades

Buns as the main sniper and another back up heals

after few days added
Custom IMP with 85 shooting & agi, 80 str & dext, 70 health & wis 60 leadership, 0 in Mechanical, Explosives and Medical. Something like that anyway

Same, I want to add Shadow to my team but can't afford him yet and even when looking at his stats by the time I can afford him I'd imagine there won't be much difference between the newbies I started with and him, assuming they last that long. Not looked at his abilities properly yet. I've been spending bit of time to train mercs shooting and agility while training militia.

I played 40hrs so far according to steam. Started a new save today and since the weather was crap today I'm almost at the same stage as before but with more balanced team. Been unlucky with weapon drops but much more luck with armour and modding parts.

@Paul_cz playing on Steam Deck? Might try streaming to deck and play downstairs on the sofa :)
