Discussion in the Model 3 thread was getting a bit off topic...

I have had a chance to look at the offer from Jag with a bit more depth now.

What I Like:

The car looks great from the outside.
Interior looks nice, pretty 'conventional' for an EV but should be decent quality from Jag. It can be specced up to far nicer than a Tesla for sure.
Performance

What I have concerns over:
Charging - the advertised 100kw charging is very much a read herring in the UK at the moment. The reality of it is there are hardly any CCS chargers and they are all 50Kw. There is only 1 CCS plug at the majority of service stations and charging locations and it is always a CCS+CHADeMO combo unit, so if someone has their Leaf on it your stuck. Those Ecotricty CCS units are also very un-reliable (just check Zap Map). This will improve over time.

Range/Efficiency - it has a great headline figure of a 90Kw/h battery pack and '298 Miles' WLTP range. We know its using larger 'laptop' type cells like a Leaf VS the cylindrical type cells in a Tesla. It's difficult to compare to a Model X because that is measured in EPA and NDEC. Now its rumoured to have an EPA range of just 220 miles. But EPA range is achievable in 'normal' driving conditions. For me that seems really poor efficiency, the Model X which is a much bigger car gets 237 on a 75Kw/hour pack and 295 on the 100Kw/hour pack. With that size of pack I would have espected to see something like 260 miles EPA range. You are looking at 400W/hour per mile vs closer to 290W/hour per mile in a Model X. As I say this is very much an estimate at this time but it's not encouraging.

What I don't like:
As with most premium car brands pretty much everything is an option. The top model doesn't even have front fog lights on a £75k car. The starting price is a bit of a red herring, the car they had on stage and is pictured would be roughly £85k.

And now for my rant about the 'launch event'....

What the hell was that?
They spend an hour talking about the I-Pace and didn't actually tell us anything about the car. It seemed to be aimed at a group of people that generally speaking don't buy Jags nor can afford them.

What I took away from it was:
The car looks nice on the outside but they hardly showed the interior.
Jack Whitehall can't drive.
iJustine is American so can't say Jaguar correctly.
No one from Jaguar actually wanted to talk much about the car which is really odd.
No details or pricing discussed.

It just seemed to miss the mark completely.

Using iJustine because of her name was a bit of an odd choice. I have got nothing against iJustine, a lot of her content is genuinely hilarious but while she is an 'influencer' most of her audience is teenage girls or early twenties females and non of it is about cars. Not many people actually know who she is.... none of them that watch her content actually buy Jag's.

The whole I-Pace VS Model X race was just cringe. Well done they managed to show that a car with a 0-60 of 4.5 is faster than a car with a 0-60 of 4.9 and 4.7, Bravo! They even did the whole 'bait and switch' thing where they said they were bringing out a P100D but just bought out a 100D, we all know a P100D would smoke an I-Pace. It was something you would expect to see from a double glazing advert not from a premium brand like Jaguar. That really annoyed me.

Did anyone else notice the car started charging at 20%?

I would have much rather seen it been presented by someone from Jaguar who had a bit of charisma about them to drum up genuine interest in the car rather than Jack Whitehall cracking **** jokes. Millions watched Elon Musk blubber his way through his Model 3 and Semi events and his public speaking is really not great but he is genuinely passionate about what he is talking about so people listen. Jack Whitehall doesn't even drive.....

Model X starts at £70,500, but the styling inside and out isn't a patch on the Jag. Think the range is actually less on the entry level Model X, too.

No the range on an entry level Model X is actually more than an I-Pace with a much smaller battery (75kw 237 EPA vs 90kw 220 EPA estimated*), this is something that I highlighted as a concern in the OP. The X is also a full size 7 seat (full size 3rd row) SUV where the I-Pace is more of a cross over and a much smaller car. EPA range is achievable for most people.

Doesn't make using a touch screen on the move any easier :/

They centralized everything on that instead of physical buttons, which is annoying. Jag haven't done that which is a plus.

I'm sorry but almost every touch screen in a car is utter garbage other than Tesla. They are the only ones to do it correctly. Did you watch the video that showed the infotainment system on the first page? It was a lag fest and you need to use it to get the most out of it, that really isn't good for such a high end car.

Also lots of black glossy plastic on the infotainment system and near the glove box. Yuck. The rest of the interior looks good though.

One thing that is worth noting though with all this battery replacement talk. In terms of garage labor it is actually really easy and simple to swap the pack so there is a saving there. Anyone competent could do it on their drive if they had enough jacks, the hardest part is getting it lined up due to the weight. A Telsa pack just drops right out and a new one bolted in place, I believe a Leaf is similar. There is nothing stopping you using a 2nd hand pack from a crashed car either, there are lots of electric conversions going on at the moment using crashed EV's battery packs.

Impressive!

It's not that impressive considering it has a 90kwh battery, the efficiency is worse than anything on the market currently including the much bigger and heavier Model X. Nothing has yet to come close to the Ionic which is the clear efficiency king currently.

Still a nice car though and 250 miles is ultimately a good range and more than most will need.
