Just been having a look at them based on what someone said in another thread.

02-ish plate ones going for around £6k

How come? Some big issues? image probs? they cost another 6k to run a year?

Whats the catch? :)

Its the small basic cars that hold their price ,the big classy ones are to expensive to run and I guess if you can afford the expense then you can afford a new one !
My mate use to drive around in a XJS looked great but dated now !

:D

They just look so classy for the price. Even if the running costs were similar to a 5-series or a bit higher its still very very reasonable imo.

Classy looks are all well & good, but 5 series running costs means an e39 5 Series I'd assume (?) and if your shelling out that sort of cash, frankly, you'd be daft to go for the Jag over the 5.

Not for nothing did it (the e39 5 ) win award after award year after year.

The pre 04 plate ones are not particularly reliable, well built or adept at doing anything other than simply wafting along. This made them unpopular against the 5 Series, the default choice in this segment between 96 and 03, and the A6 and E Class, the cars of choice for people who didnt like BMW's.

There is buyers guide on these in the latest practical performance car. I'm not a fan of Jags but always thought S-Types looked nice. They are now seriously cheap.

Must say that this is still a car i am considering for an ultra cheap workhorse while money is tied up elsewhere, they seem to represent absolutely excellent value for money. There are concerns about reliability, and the styling isnt to everyones taste. I'd take the risk if i didnt fancy a 5-series instead.

What size engine? My mate has a 3 litre and it's a lovely bit of machinery. Servicing is expensive though and it's on it's 3rd autobox, an early problem which is apparently fixed. Though he does drive it very hard which has no doubt contributed.

Why do you need to be old and bald to like a nice leather interior and a comfy ride?

Because they have very little else that is appealing. They have an old mans image, poor reliability history and don't exactley give the driving thrills of a 5 series, A6 or E class.

If a comfy ride and leather is all that matters why not just get a Mondeo Ghia?

Because mondeo ghia's do not offer a comfy ride? They are too small and light to even compete. Different car altogether.

The Jag is practically silent inside and has buckets of torque and loads of space front and back and in the boot. I like it. Audi interiors are so efficient they are bland and you don't feel like you're sat in a luxo barge like you do in the Jag. Other Jag drivers nod and approve. People don't deliberately hate you like they do if you're in a BMW :D

Oh I forgot Jag made such wonderful cars they make huge profits like their competition.

I didnt say they were wonderful, as you can see from my sig i dont have one. They are a different league to a bloomin mondeo though, and are nice cars worthy of consideration if they were perhaps slightly more reliable.
