Hi guy.

I have a 2003 2.5 X-Type and the heater is next to useless.
When set to hotest on the turn dial the temp never gets over luke warm and after a while will actually start to get a little cold for a minute or two, then go luke warm again...
If i set it to cold its cold as expected, but hot just aint hot
The temp gauge appears to work as normal, after a few minutes running from cold it rises to mid way on the dial.
The Air-con blasts cold air fine.

Any experts can tell me what is the most likely cause? I have googled it but results are low on the ground.

Any advice appreciated.

A leaking cooling system can cause an airlock and as water leaks its replaced by air which can collect in the heater matrix core. you only have a small amount of water passing through the core then so the heating is very limited.

Some cars also have a valve to control flow to the heater matrix, if thats stuck closed you wont get hot water to the heater matrix.

Cheers for the reply, there dont appear to be any water leaks, but an air lock is still possible from what i've read, also the control valve is a possibility I just don't know how to check and can't afford to take it to a garage this month. Been a long time since i did any engine work... lol

Will see if i can find an online manual.

have you checked your coolant level in your expansion tank & the radiator water level, ive read somewhere that this can affect the heating temps

Run the car and leave the filler cap off the coolant (where you top up) till it starts to boil/spit over, this should get rid of any air in your system, at the same time turn the heaters on hot and see if it makes any effect

I'm sorry this is a bit vague.

I remember a thread ages back about ford heating systems, and there was a part that commonly failed. I'd imagine the X type uses the same heating as the Mondeo.

resistor pack on modeos fail often but that's obvious as the heater settings 1 thru 4 fail. The X-Type will have climate control though rathe than manual.

From what i have seen the valves are usually hidden under the dash somewere, i have only ever done one on a C4 but i no a few cars have the valves there, under the foot well or behind the centre console.

Try searching google for a diagram, long shot but might come up with something.

Thanks for all the suggestions etc, I ran the car till warm theias morning with the cap off the expansion tank (not till spitting though), made no difference, will try it till its spitting hot ;)
Failing that i will look into the other suggestions, cheers lads :)

there is definitely the right level of coolant then? I had this exact problem with my mondeo (same car /engine, different badge), and the water pump housing had cracked meaning that my coolant had been dumped somewhere :( This happened twice infact, the housings are quite weak :\

Well the problem only appeared after i topped up the expansion tank as it was a little low, however i have seen no signs of a leak.

UPDATE:

Well drove home with the cap off and it made no difference, so when I got home I opened the bonnet to put the cap back on and noticed the expansion tank was low again, as it was bright I was also able to see a strange pink colouration around some of the bolts below the tank....

Gave the pipe from the expansion tank a good hard squeeze and what do you know, the liquid squired out of the fitting.
It appears that the spring compression clip has not been tight enough and so the water has been slowly dripping out of the pipe... replaced it with a jubalee clip and topped up the tank; now I have heat again ;)

Thanks for the help guys :)

I think it might be a faulty spring compression clip. I suspect a new jubalee clip and a top of the tank should see the heater working again, might be worth a try.

...oh

@ Housey... LOL

@ TheDude...
Although people will tell you they are just a Mondeo, this is by no means a bad thing, I had both a Mk1 and Mk2 Mondeo prior to this and the difference is easy to see, comfy seats, plenty of space and good power.
It's definatley a step up from the Mondeo it's based on and great to drive, however mine is the Sport model so has better suspension than the standard models which to me were too soft on the ride.
Cornering and grip is fantastic in this model and the 40/60 4WD is a bonus.
Mine is the 2.5 V6 (194BHP) and I get an average of 28mpg.
Group 15 ins.

Only complaint: Gearbox is such a typical ford box.
Watch out for faulty electrics in models prior to 2003.
