OK my mates jag caught fire last night and destroyed the engine bay.
Just driving along then cut out and burst into flames.

He bought it from a trader 4 weeks ago out the autotrader.

what's the best way to go forward, insurance company or is the trader liable for anything.
He has found some really dodgy welding on the car also.

Given the fire damage, any idea how you'd prove an existing fault from the mess under the bonnet? Assuming its a typical I.e. very destructive fire....

One for the insurance I'd guess....

It's almost impossible to pin a cause on anything related to vehicle fires but especially those involving the engine compartment area. There are so many variables and possible causes that putting it down to anything in particular is incredibly difficult. I assume the FRS attended?. We don't generally get involved in drafting reports on causes of vehicle fires and indeed the current computerised Incident Recording System (IRS) which replaced the old hand written 'Fire Report' gives very little option for the incident commander to speculate on what a possible cause could be. And ultimately that is exactly what it is - speculation drawn from experience of previous incidents coupled with individual circumstances of the incident concerned. The amount of times as an incident commander a vehicle owner has asked me as I'm obtaining their personal details 'So what caused it'.......well, I'd be a proverbial millionaire if I had a quid for each of them. :)
