I have £19k for an XFR, so it'll obviously be pre-facelift. Anyone here own who's owned one that could give me a few pointers on what to look for when viewing? I've read up on Pistonheads and a few Jag forums and the engine seems fairly bullet proof. Any advice would be welcome, thanks :)

Other than the bodywork revisions and small interior changes the facelift offers little over the original I thought and £19k is the upper limit really. I've got a 2k slush fund for repairs, consumables etc that I'd rather not eat into plus I rather like the look of the original :)

Gearbox was a big change from memory, it got the ZF. Aesthetics were the major difference and if you prefer the pre-facelift then fairy snuff on that one! An updated touch screen interface aaaaand the external lights.

Ahh, yes it got the 8 speed ZF rather than 6 speed. Wish I could afford one simply to get a newer model with less miles, but I've saved as much as I can really. I've got other things that need cash now and my wife has been patient enough :D

You can get an early facelift for your budget, but it'll be reasonably high mileage, I traded my early 2012 facelift XFR in for less than that late last year and then it spent 6 months appearing at different dealers before finally selling again on eBay for under your budget. There aren't any major issues which they suffer with, but if you're unlucky the repairs can get stupidly expensive, but no more than any other car of this type. A guy I know had his engine implode and the total bill paid for by extended warranty was around £23k for a new engine fitting.

The 8 speed didn't come until MY2013 (generally 62 plate onwards) though, but apart from the speed of shifts I think I preferred the 6 speed to the 8 speed, the 8 speed always seems to be hunting for the right gear. There were changes to the engine maps at the same time as the 8 speed swap which took some of the character away, but it's still a brilliant engine. Fuel economy was better in my 8 speed, on a long motorway run I could get 34mpg, and the absolute max I ever saw in the 6 speed was 31 after about 30 miles of 50mph average cameras.

One thing you'll probably want to get is a different exhaust, the stock system just mutes the car too much. I went with the Spires Stage 2 system, which totally transforms the car and is well worth the price (I actually still have it in my shed, I really need to get around to selling it ;) ). You can get cheaper custom made jobs, but you'll not know what you're getting until it's on the car.

The XFR, like the S-Type R before it likes to eat it's suspension bushes. Jag will charge you for a complete new arm but an indie can press new ones in. Anything over 60k miles will be in need of new ones.

Read up on AC leaks inside the cabin. Very common on XF of this year. Friend had a 2006 XF that had a wet passenger footwell and turned out to be this. Needs the gearbox out although some reckon to fix with it in. £800 + Seems 1 in every 2 suffer. Also he had issues with steering and AC gas leaks / compressor issues.

I'm not sure what car you're thinking of, but the XF wasn't introduced until late 2008. In 6 years of being on various Jaguar XF forums and groups, and owning 3 different cars, I've never heard of the issue you're saying 50% of them have.

One other thing I thought of. Water pump. They are made of cheese and will fail. Mine went at 32k miles which is about average. The newer ones are better but still fail.

Hi,

Fat fingers, I meant 2008.

http://www.jaguarforum.com/showthread.php?t=83810 <- I was looking at buying a XFR and went through this site. Here is a thread about the AC pipe. Search on google and you will see its common. Cant find the page that states 1:2 cars has the problem, but read it in a `sticky` on a Jag XFR forum.

That's a thread about the XKR. Either way, I've had 3 and never had an issue, and never heard of anyone else with that issue :)

I've heard of this issue with the XF, but I sold my XFS on 96k and first XFR on 98k, both were on their original water pumps with no signs of any issues.

I guess it's luck of the draw. The fact that on the XJ forum (same engine) there is a massive thread called "Water pump replaced?" which is 6 pages long of people listing their mileages at time of failure says to me it's a fairly widespread issue.
It's also been redesigned 5 times since the release of the 5.0 V8. I've got the latest one (which was a pain as it needed new hoses because they changed the routing).
