The last time I built a PC was just over 5 years ago so I haven't kept up to date with how hardware progresses in technology and prices throughout each year. How long after christmas 'til component prices drop? If at all? Are there simply discounts? or permanent price drops? Does christmas not affect prices at all?

I was going to build now in time for MW2 but that's now screwed, so I was going to wait until January in the hope that the prices might be a little cheaper for the components I'm after - seeing as there's nothing I really want to play until 2010.

Im pondering putting my main purchases eg mobo, cpu, ram, gfx on hold tbh until the new year but its a gamble.

Some items are going up in price again because of the ****** $ and a downscale of production to reduce overheads.

It could go either way to be honest.

Yes, I've also noticed prices on several components go up. But I'm wondering if this a price hike towards christmas, afterall we are still 2 months away. But I'm just not sure.

anyone whos seen the market for the past 2 years have any input? What happened after xmas 2007 and 2008?

Well last year the january sales started in the middle of november in an attempt to stem the recession and prices didn't change much at all.

Last year I7 920 dropped gradually from beginning of Jan until April, not in one go and tbh, not that much overall. Anyone buying a 920 processor at any time 6-12 months ago will be happy with the price they paid at the time.

Its the costs of the motherboards that dropped more. And that didnt happen in the first 3 months of the year in one big go. Mostly products release in April/May iirc.

Its purchase dependent. My Samsung 220 monitor bought this time last year for £200 is now £135. But that didnt drop until May ish.

As some alluded above. The £/$ ration went **** up during the last Christmas season, so what happened last year wont help you too much imho.

Usually in my experience the prices come down in about March/April as newer hardware comes out. Still, not by a great deal.
