Are there any disadvantages to purchasing a US PS3 instead of a JAP PS3??

What are the differences you will notice having one in the uk??

Also i hear you can play the jap ps3 in the uk by simply using a kettle lead with a 3a fuse as the power pack automatically adjusts the voltage.

Is this correct and is it the same with the us ps3?

Yeah you can do the same with the US PS3's

What will be the big difference is the DVD region codes. JAP and UK are in the same DVD region. So if you want to watch your DVDs then you will need a JAP PS3

On the other hand, iirc, JAP and US are in the same BD region, which is different from the UK one.
Although PS3 games are supposed to be region free so when it comes out in the EU it wont matter. But saying that, RR7 and Resistance both show a form of region on the boxes which i don't know about, and we wont find out until March.

Other than that there is no differences, as neither can play PAL PS2 games.

A/1 North America, Central America, South America, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South East Asia.

B/2 Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

C/3 India, China, Russia, Central and South Asia.

Hi Guys, just placed a back order for a US ps3...are you absolutely sure the american model will work with just a kettle lead and 3amp fuse?

I have seen more than a few go up in smoke on these now..... :eek: :eek:

So a stepup convertor is best then? i've seen people on a certain auction site saying one will cost around £10/15 .....surely it would need a 500 watt convertor ( don't they push out over 380 watts) ...which cost more around £49

Looks dodgy if you ask me. You can pick up a 110v stepdown convertor for next to nothing. I use this for all of my import consoles and I would imagine the PS3 would be no different.

Sorry m8 I was winding you up (I think) :D , both the Japanese ones and US ones according to other forums and people who have them, shoud run fine on a kettle lead as the transformer inside is 110-240 volts apparantly. Up to you if you trust it ;) .

ahhhhhhhh... :p had me worried, don't really want to spend more money on a stepdown if it's not needed, saying that and knowing my luck...you might soon be seeing pics of a burnt out ps3 *lol*

I've ordered a hdmi cable to go with it also, will this also output sound? not really up on what these cables do.

I have my Jap PS3 plugged in via a standard kettle lead too although I did swap the fuse to a 5a one (couldn't find a 3a) but I may buy a cheap stepdown transformer just to make sure.

HDMI lead will supply sound as well as picture.

I'm pretty sure they are making the consoles region free from almost everything but films (makes sence as it would stop those companies who legally supply chips, using the fact that they enable you to play import games as an excuse. Kind of closes a loophole.

When you register an online account you will need to be able to register it against a country where it is released already though, so if you have any friends/relatives in US or Jap then there address is a good bet. I used my step mums parents address in california, but unfortunately I can't buy anything from the Playstation store as i recognises my card isnt registered at their address!!!! :mad:


Seems to be a fair amount of people with import PS3's on here now - maybe we should have an official PS3 import owners thread?

well i have a online friend from the states...so an address to register hopefully shouldn't be a problem.....bit carp about not being able to use the online store though...will it still be possible to get updates?

Yeah, one of the first things I did was to update the firmware. Plus you can still download all demo's etc It's just stuff you need to pay for that's difficult!
