Japanese government downgrades tsunami warning to tsunami advisory
The Japanese government has just downgraded its tsunami warnings to a tsunami advisory after the earthquake off the country's shore.
This means it now sees lower estimated wave heights and less risk of inundation.
The earlier warning had been issued for three northeastern prefectures. An additional tsunami advisory has been in place for another two prefectures.
As we explained in our post at 15.09, a warning is issued when a tsunami of up to three metres is expected, with damage expected to low-lying buildings and an evacuation ordered.
An advisory is issued for expected tsunamis of up to one metre. This is a threat to those in the water and people are told to get out of the seas immediately.
