Mr Abe was shot from the back and collapsed halfway during his speech, and appeared to be bleeding, broadcaster NHK reported. His attacker is in custody, it added.
Ex-Tokyo governor Yoichi Masuzoe said in a tweet that Mr Abe was in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest.
The term is often used before a death is officially confirmed in Japan.
Mr Abe, who was Japan's longest-serving prime minister, stepped down in 2020 citing health reasons. He later revealed that he had suffered a relapse of ulcerative colitis, an intestinal disease.
He was succeeded by his close party ally Yoshihide Suga, who was later replaced by Fumio Kishida.
Incidents of gun violence are rare in Japan, where handguns are banned.

Well didn't see the coming and currently wondering if China might be involved but more likely to be something personal. Maybe the doomsday cult is back and this is their opening salvo?

He has now sadly passed away according to their media, can't imagine how the people of Japan are handling this as it's just so unsettling.

RIP Shinzo Abe :(

As for the guy who did it, capital punishment still exists doesn't it in Japan? Guess he will be hanged, least it won't be a burden on Japan feeding someone and giving them shelter for the next 50ish years.
A quick death seems like mercy to me.

I like the way the assassin wears a mask and follows good health and safety procedures. Must be galling to see for all the anti gun aficionados, but where there's a will there's a way :(
Being anti-proliferation of ballistic arms doesn't mean it's impossible as where there's a will there is always a way.

The fact that his gun was homemade just proves that Japan's gun regulation works and that the failing was lax security measures partly brought about by hubris over those gun regulations. I suspect this is a mistake they won't be making again.

Can't help but think that world leaders might be feeling on edge after this and become even more paranoid about their domestic risks than they already were especially under current less than ideal economic circumstances. What ought to be a domestic Japanese concern has undoubtedly sent a shockwave of unknown consequence around the world.

Whilst whatever it is may be specifically Japanese in nature, I think it's more likely that it's related to the general conspiracy pyramid and that it is not difficult to figure out why the police have no intention on releasing his statements as it is both dishonourable to a recently deceased high-figure Japanese life as well as only helping those that are lamentably disturbed enough to believe those things.

I believe it is either various organisations that could be considered NWO (thus anti-Japanese nationalism) or something more akin to Q.
