Java in Ubuntu 11.10

I went to play chess today against the computer on chess.com and I cant see the board? I have installed Ubuntu restricted extras but nothing?

Can someone tell me how to install Java in a easy to understand way

as I am new to Linux

PPA Hmm is this safe to do? seems like I may leave my self open to something doing this!

this may sound daft but

when you have added the two lines how do you save it ? or do you just exit
