Morning all,

We are toying with the idea of upgrading our caravan and whilst the 170bhp Superb tows the current caravan OK the nee caravan will be much heavier and a twin wheel...ideally suited to a big engine 4x4.

I was wanting to try and hold out until EV caught up to allow a 200 mile range towing but this is a while off yet so the only other option is a nice big diesel engine.

Looking around the Grand Cherokee has caught my eye, overland spec seems nice.

Has anyone actually owned one of these?

The press seem to diss them but actual owner reviews seem very positive.

Do we know if the infotainment is easily updated with say an android head unit without looking too dire?

Any other recommendations? We love the Disco 4 but I just feel the running costs could be quite crippling if something major goes wrong?

A VW toureg could also be a contender...I however quite like the more rugged look of the Jeep as well as Disco.

Any help appreciated!

Ive had both the Grand Cherokee and the VW Touareg. Loved both and used to tow horse trailers with 2 horses on board so way heavier than you plan to tow.

Both were great vehicles. Preferred the Touareg for its understated looks tbh. Ais suspension is a must esp if towing.

I looked long and hard at both the Touareg and the GC when I was changing cars in 2015. For me the Touareg was a much better drive - tauter and better built. 3500kg towing limit but as Greebo said, get one with air suspension. My just departed Q7 with air suspension was great for stowing.

Asd for the Disco 4 - errr, let's just say that everyone we know who has had, or still has, one has had issues that required it to be towed to the dealership or be in the dealership sometimes for months at a time. Close friends of ours had to have a whole new vehicle as the original one couldn't be fixed by LR.

Yeah I know too many disco people needing complete rear axles. Great towing vehicles and offroad but would never have one due to their poor reliability.

The GC 2016 and up are the better ones, don't go 2012-2014 (unless it's a money thing, not sure how much you want to spend) as these had lots of teething problems then again they'll all be sorted now... (2015 seems to have a bad rep in states as well but not sure why?) 2016 is where the sweet spot seems to be for reliability... V8 is rubbish with MDS they fail so stick with the Diesel if for towing. I know two people with them and although they get a bad rep for failing, one of them has had his from new and absolutel nothing in 70k miles other than routine maintenance. I'd say if anything was weak on them, ensure that the transmission fluids are dropped every 40k miles and they'll run and run. I'm on my 2nd GC and I love them never really caused me any problems at all from a functional point of view! Plus they're different!

I personally wouldn't touch a single thing from Land Rover but that's just me. They make Jeep look reliable. As for the VW this will cost a lot more when it goes wrong I'd expect as isn't that the shared parts bin with Porsche or am I getting mixed up?

The platform and engines are the same as audi Q7/porsche cayenne but VW bits are nothing like as expensive. Always made me laugh bearing in mind all the tech is the same, that the HUD was a £895 option in the Toureg, a £1200 one in the Audi and a £2000 option in the Porsche - all for the identical parts, its just Porsche can get their buyers to £2,000 for some VW buyers pay £895 for.

Thanks all.

I really like the look of the Jeep and it seems the specs for the money is much better than the Toureg.

I'd imagine that for say the budget for a 2016 Jeep I'd need a few grand more for the Toureg, especially if I go for a toureg with air suspension?

How reliable is the Jeep air suspension? I guess all in all it's quite a safe bet anyway?

It's as reliable as anything else and WAY more than a Land Rover... so yeah you'll be fine. As for the specs, yeah you'd get WAY more tech for the coin and the UConnect system IMHO is one of the best, it's really so simple, nicely done, responsive... even my old 11 year old system is fantastically easy to use. I'm slightly biased, however, I just like Jeeps, they're different, cool and you get a lot for your money compared to the opposition plus the interior I think are aging really well! Like I say though I'm slightly biased. My mate had a Toureg and got shut after 18 months, it was 4 years old and it cost him £8k in the 18 months he had it... could it be isolated incident? Maybe, but he swore it was the worst car he's ever had. Suppose you get stories like that from any manufactorer

Yeah thought it did, still won't be cheap though I'd imagine compared to a non-german make... but yeah takes the micky don't it for the same tech hahaha...

Although Jeeps arent cheap. Remember there is good reason people say JEEP stands for Just Empty Every Pocket :P

Thanks for that.

Is there any particular forums/Facebook pages you can recommend to look at?

I have mixed feelings about the Touareg - want to like them but haven't been impressed with the 3L V6 and those with the bigger engines have had big bills when things have gone wrong - albeit that has mostly been their own fault - i.e. driving full tilt into foot deep water or whatever it was turning into 15 grand bill.

I'm assuming you are more looking for large SUV type vehicles than pickups?

Open to options to be honest. I was set on waiting out for an electric which could tow but will make do with the ID3 for family and days out duties...never had a bigger diesel before so thought I'd make the most of it whilst I can.

What are you thinking pickup wise?
