jeremy clarkson

Are you reading a different article to me?

This engine is little short of a masterpiece. There’s so much low-down grunt that even the BMW traction control system — a good one normally — is regularly woken from its electronic slumber by the wave of torque.

And of course it’s all fitted to a perfectly balanced chassis with the usual array of excellent steering, fine brakes and a nicely chosen balance between comfort and handling.

As a driver’s car, then, this is yet another winner. But I still wouldn’t buy one.

he just says he personally doesn't like it despite the fact thats it pretty good.

If I was the editor I would have taken some of the pointless personal insults and forced metaphors out of his article, but otherwise it's sound.

I think he's in a very good position to comment on the car, and overall I'd say the review is a positive one, with the 335i SE coupe seeming like a great car with a fantastic engine as well as everything else you'd expect from a BMW.

I have to agree with him though, they're pretty ugly and boring looking nowadays. I think his calling it a 'dog' is more in relation to the styling rather than the handling.

As said, you need to take some of what he says with a large handful of salt though.

He praises the engine etc, but just doesn't like the interior or exterior styling. Which, because it's a purely subjective thing, shouldn't put anyone off purchasing one.

P.S. i'd also take it with a huge pinch of salt. Jeremy Clarkson's reviews (especially in the Times) are opinionated and entertaining. If you look at The Times article, despite it being titled "335i SE Coupe", you'll notice that approximately 60% of it isn't anything to do with a 335 at all.

I'm also a bit confused as to why he's comparing a RX-8 to it. Sure it's a coupe, but hardly in the same class.

Sounds like you've created this thread w/o even reading the article.

He praises it's handling, performance, brakes etc... Just dislikes the way it looks, which is subjective.

normally i have respect for this man.

Buit reading this :

He has lost it all.

Seriously, has he been spending too much tim in rolls royce's ?

This must be the best drivers car around and he calls it a "dog"

what the hell ?

He's right, the engine is awesome, I'm sure the dynamics are spot on, however the rear DOES NOT look like its from the same car as the front (even worse on the cab), and the interior, compared to an A5, is gash!

Exactly. For some people the subdued styling is just the ticket, others want something a little more exciting for that kind of money. I like it that BMW know what the important parts to concentrate on are in a car, they just need to get the finishing touches right for everyone.

Personally I'd be quite happy to have one as a main car or business car, but it would have to be a bit more interesting too if I was going to spend that much money on something for some fun as well.

And then of course we get to BMW’s engines. The V10 in the M5. The straight six in the M3. And — whisper it — their big diesel. Each has a remarkable knack of blending the need for speed with the peculiar need western man has developed for saving the sky.

anyone spot the mistake in that article - Fox, you're not allowed to answer :p

Only bit I'd disagree with

Yes, of course, the 1-series is a ghastly little car with very little interior space, a boot the size of a matchbox and bread-van styling, but to drive it’s lovely.

Not that I have much experience driving them - but from my experience I'd say the 1 series are horrid to drive - handling is like a barge and power unpredictable.

I am as you know a massive BMW fan. However, you are wrong. It is not 'the best drivers car around'. There are many better drivers cars.

It is, perhaps, one of the best all round drivers cars - a car with hugely broad appeal, but there are many more focused (And thus more compromised elsewhere) cars than a 3 Series Coupe.

The 1 Series does not handle like a barge, the handling is very tidy as you'd expect from a car of its size and type. Handling is a strength of the 1 Series.

As for unpredictable power, thats small turbodiesels for you not the 1 Series on its own.

Apparently the new ones are a lot better to drive than some of the older ones which were indeed horrid. I think that could probably be verified by some owners on here.

Ah - well I expect the car he drives is fresh off the press, tuned and so on and the one I drive is a company car with 100K miles on the clock :D I'm also used to a golf so dunno if that makes any odds.
