Not sure what form of disclosure it is, apart from a police check one.

My friend is on JSA and applied for a job requiring a disclosure, but she's been told that she can't claim this back. The cost of it was £59 more than a week's worth of JSA!
I'd take it guess that it's a PVG.

Can she claim this back from the employer or from the Job Centre. I think it's ridiculous that if she doesn't get the job she's effectively over a weeks wage out of pocket for nothing.

My other half's company requires applicants to pay for it too...Surely she shouldn't have to have it done until she's offered the job, that way the offer would be conditional on her passing the disclosure checks.

Depends on company. My other half didnt pay for her first one but when applying for a new job she had to pay for a CRB. After handing in her notice the original company countered and offered to refund her other CRB too to avoid losing her.

I guess it will depend on how many applicants they expect to get whether they will pay. Its not cheap to do and can add massively to recruitment costs for small companies.

usually on the jobcentre advert it says employer will cover disclosure fees.

but in syaing that up here its disclosure scotland, so not sure if it would be different

I've certainly never paid for my disclosure, and I've worked in many places where they are required. However, the majority of my employers have been charities, or government bodies.

Having said that, I know the way we handle background checks in Scotland has changed, with individuals now registering with the PVG scheme. The advantage of this is that the fee will be a one off payment and the check will cover her for all jobs she goes for in the future as it is constantly updated rather than the applicant being rechecked over and over again. It's possible that some private employers are taking advantage of this and pushing to cost of membership back on to the applicant, but personally I'd still expect my employer to meet the cost of the check for me as the successful applicant.

Is she working with kids or will she be in charge of a large amount of money? If not, they should not be asking her to complete a disclosure check and definitely should not be asking her to pay for it. So many companies just blanketly CRB check their staff when they shouldn't be doing it. I was 3 months into an IT contract once and they asked me to complete out a CRB check. I refused, they chased me a couple of times and eventually gave up. Unless the job is exempt from the RoO Act then it's none of their business.

1. why is it jobcentre will pay you for travel or even to help you pay for suits/clothes but not this

2. why is it that if you already had a CRB done with one company couple of weeks ago, you move to a new company and they insist on having a new one done?
