Essex, innit?
I met my old boss for lunch yesterday.

I've always kept in contact with him asd a) he's a nice chap, b) never burn your bridges and c) it keeps my current boss on his toes :p !

Anyway, basically my old boss spent the course of lunch and beers in the pub afterwards begging me to come back.

He was saying what an assett I'd be and how busy they are. All about opportunities etc.

The killer is he hinted towards almost tripple my current salary!

The thing is, money does indeed talk, but I have a real laugh at my current place. They are genuinily nice people and I get on really well with them. the prospects are also excellent. That said however, I will never earn as much as at the other company, which is renown for being the top property company in the UK.

I obviously left that last company for a reason. And I must admit, the prospect of money is blurrig over those reasons. I can't actually remember why I left. The majority of people there are indeed pompus idiots. But I don't think I fell out with anyone.

Oh there was that secretary that became pregnant... but that's another story! (joke)

Anyway, would you take money over work environment? Remember we are talking serious money here...

What to do?

James

being happy in your job is more important than money mate.

If you are truely enjoying where you currently work and are having no financial worries then stay. You probably left the last place due to either the amount of work/stress being to much so do you think that being paid more would change the amount of stress. NO! You would just be rich and too knackered to spend it!

It really depends how serious, serious money is - is a few years working there gonna clear your motgage, enable you to drive whatever luxury car you like, safeguard your future and provide for your family??

If yes then do it....if no then you have to really think hard on how happy you'll be, better to be earning less but enjoying it and thus you are happy and healthy, than being a rich but miserable person which is when your health and family etc. suffer.

I left my old job where I was unhappy for a job with lots of money, more than double my original salary. Had student debts and a mortgage and thought if I spend a few years in this job then I'd be able to clear my debts and move onto something I'd rather do.

Was in the job a month and just realised I hated it and didn't want to spend every day doing what I was doing. Ended up leaving the company when my trial period was up - no other job to go to, but just knew I had to do something to change my life.

Had a bad year too, lots of :( things happening so took some time out and really thought about it. Decided that money wasn't everything and found a job which I absolutely love, but the money isn't as great as it was (back to a bit under the original job!) and my life is totally different.

Funny thing is, I have debts I need to pay too, and thought that worrying about them would make it harder if I took a pay cut but tbh I'm that much happier about everything, that I've started to be able to make some really positive changes to my life and everything seems better.

Just my experience though, won't be the same for everyone, but for me the money definitely wasn't worth it. As you said, you left for a reason. I personally wouldn't ever go backwards, but then, that's just me :)

You need to remember that I worked at this last place for 6 years, so it's not a gamble.

Still really unsure though.

yes, easily.

I worked at the original place for 6 years too. Still wouldn't go back. Personally I'd ask him to make me a serious offer. He 'hinted' at triple, the reality of wha he can offer may not be near that. Get a serious offer before you start thinking about it. :)

Tough call.

I'm comfortable in my job at the moment. I earn enough to pay bills and live happily enough. No career path though. A 3x salary increase would be welcomed by me.. 3x!! That's the cost of working with pompous idiots. A 2k increase (for example) to work with them may not be worthwhile..

Would the 3x salary be increased on a yearly basis? Are there career paths, training oportunities and high prospects?

Loyalty doesn't pay the bills.

Money doesn't necessarily buy you happiness.

You've worked there before. I can't see the problem..

what you probably need to do is think, had they offered you triple your salary to stay there would you have? If the answer's yes then get resigning. If you're not sure then you need to think it over.

Go for the money. Do what you usually do and don't burn bridges.

Triple salary is a mountain. Get everything in writing, in contract, don't take words for anything.

If he is serious about tripling your salary then get confirmation of the job offer in writing, as others have said do not accept on the basis of vague hints. If/when you do get this confirmation then you might be as well seeing what your current work can offer in comparison, if they know you could be earning significantly more elsewhere then they may be prepared to offer you a similar package particularly if you make it clear that you would prefer to stay with them.
