Hi Chaps and Chapettes,

I have an interview coming up for a job as a Customer Review Advisor in a building society next week. The lady who arranged this with me explained that their would be a competency test on the day also but was quite vague about it.

I'm guessing this would be predominantly maths based? I got an A at GCSE and took A level maths, so I should be fine. But I was wondering if anybody works in the field or has done similar and could offer me some advice on what to brush up on?

Any advice is much appreciated :)

Hey, went for several interviews at building society's before I got my current job.
But yes its basically Maths/English test in the form of a booklet, you have to complete it within a certain time frame (45min was what I usually had) and score high enough to get through (I never got through any of them lol, not good at english/maths)

The English one just consists of multiple choice answers in regards to spelling, meaning, punctuation, and viablility.
The Maths one is just a simple maths test, again multiple choice. Allot of those if a is x and v is 2 x 4squared blah blah I hat maths. Some of it will just be normal math problems you would expect in school.

Competency based means providing examples.

There may be a basic maths test but assuming this is a customer facing role you will be asked about previous experiences when you may have had a difficult customer and how you dealt with it.

Questions such as: Tell me about the time a customer said no? Tell me about a time when you have had to manage a customers expectations? Tell me about a time when you have had to persuade a customer to your way of thinking?

Use the STAR technique for answering the questions.

Roughly two minutes for each answer, do not waffle and the most important part of the answer are the actions you took followed by the outcome.

Thank you for the input guys.

That links was really helpful too PapaLazaru, I'll make sure to pen some answer to some likely questions over the next couple of nights. I've just left a career in hospitality so have plenty of ammunition for customer service style questions.

If they ask you to type anything up and print it out, make sure to proof read it. I was tested on this once and figured "they won't bother making me type something out with mistakes and hidden instructions embedded within it". Needless to say I don't work there now!
