Hi guys,

I have a job interview tomorrow after two initial interviews. The first was with HR (standard) and the second was with my would-be boss (standard). Now I have a third, 30 minute telephone call with someone from a team I would be working with now and then but won't be technical questions due to the differing nature of the finance roles.

Anyone ever come across this type before? What kind of questions were you asked?

I'm expecting the generic "why do you want to work for X", "why do you want to leave Y" that I have already been asked and maybe how do you think both teams work together but other than that I'm running a little thin...

Cheers

I doubt they'd give a **** about generic questions, then again I don't know your industry. It is more likely to be a 'fit' related thing, especially if they're on the business side and are paying for you/your team.

They'll want to know if you're likely to get on well with them/their team members and maybe a bit about your business/domain experience (if relevant).

The competency and technical questions should have been ticked off already by the actual manager hiring you.

'fit' questions can be anything - I went for one role at a bank and passed the first couple of rounds with some IT director in London + the hiring manager/team lead in the US... then had an interview with some old guy who seemed to basically run their London office and the head of one of the trading desks. The head trader was pretty chilled and just wanted to know I'd got experience of X and Y - no technical details at all.

The old guy was all over the place, asked me twice what football team I supported - he considered that very important as the various traders/sales guys all talk about football on a Monday morning he'd noted... Then he went off on one about golf... then he was interested in other hobbies etc.. then he was off on one again about how he loved walking in the Scottish Highlands.

It was quite a straightforward interview, they weren't in a position to really assess my competence for the role itself, the actual hiring manager had done that already anyway - they just wanted to know I understood their side/the business side and that I seem like I'd fit in OK with the guys in their teams.

As Dowie says sounds like they're looking for 'do you fit'. I would be going on the offensive so to say and asking questions about this team you'll be working with, the expected role you'll need to play, what the team want from you etc, then taking it from there.

Be prepared to show that you can come up with ideas, listen to others, take the lead depending on what you think they're looking for based on your opening questions. Also look for similar situations in your job history and give example of how you slotted nicely into a team.

Goes without saying, don't lie, and if it sounds like they want something you don't want to be, then answer professionally and take it as a good opportunity to simply practice interview skills, then offline consider if the position is right for you.

Good luck :-)
