Just thought I'd post my recent experience of JL's 5 year TV warranty. It may help someone as I've been reading mixed results/outcomes on various forums.

I purchased a Sony KD65XH9505 for £1299 in July 2021. There was a £100 off promotion running on it at the time and if I remember rightly it had been replaced by a newer model. Anyway, a cracking price for the top end 2020 LED model from Sony.

Fast forward to 3 weeks ago and the screen develops a slight flicker followed by an immediate shut down. A red light on the front flashed 4 times which I read wasn't a good sign.

I call JL who assign a local repair company to look at it. They don't even want me to turn it on - the 4 flashes from the red light tells them all they need to know and they leave minutes after arriving.
I've since spoken to them a couple of times and they said they were waiting for Sony to offer a replacement.

This afternoon I then get a call from JL informing me that the TV is beyond economical repair and that they want to offer me a new TV.
Excellent, what is it I ask?
A Sony KD65X75WL worth £849 she replies. It's a similar specification to what you already have.
I politely reply that she has just demonstrated she has little technical knowledge of TV's and that there's no way I'll accept that as it's like me buying a Ferrari and you offering me a Ford Fiesta in return!
The conversation then takes a turn as she asks if I'd like a full refund instead :o

Voucher for £1299 issued whilst I was still on the phone and the dead TV is being collected next week.
Cheers John Lewis :D

Glad you got a good outcome from them - I tried a few years back to reject a TV that had issues and got fobbed off by them. Personally will never use them for anything like that again.

Ditto. I had an absolute nightmare getting it sorted. By the time they finally refunded me the TV had dropped in price and they were insistent that their policy of refunding the current price took priority over the statutory consumer rights. I got it sorted in the end but had to go there and talk loudly in a busy shop.

It put me of using them again.

In the past I rejected a specific model of Panasonic Plasma TV 4 times in a row, 3x times while the delivery guys waited to see if I would accept it (backlight banding issue). On the 4th rejection, JL offered me a free upgrade to the model above, easily £3-400 more at the time, which I accepted. It's still going strong, 10+ years later.

I would buy from JL again, however a couple of years ago I went with an LG E9 OLED from Richer Sounds, as JL didn't have it for sale. It's still within it's 6 year warranty period and - touch wood - hasn't displayed any issues at all. It's going so well that I see no immediate reason to upgrade to the current LG G4 model, despite the desire for something new and shiny.

Slightly hazy memory but I ended up getting a voucher for something like 70% of the original purchase price of the TV when my Sony developed a weird line across the screen after 4.5 years.

They tried to say that my dad was watching too much TV as his OLED got burn watching Sky TV :D

Had a loud conversation in the store and they replaced it with a newer model. Asked them how many hours a day he was allowed to watch TV.

Glad you said no, always go spec for spec and don't accept the sales or Cs talk of its within the same spec.

You know these big companies when they go back to manfaucturer's like LG, they get a full refund anyhow. I know since I went through the exact same process with LG and JL, so did the entire RMA process. Its digusting to see them wiggle out of giving you your moneys worth.

Richer Sounds do a 10% reduction in value per year for their 6 year warranty. So if you make a claim 5 years in you'll only get 50% back of the original price

Costco are the best for warranty. You can be a week away from the end of a 5 year warranty and they'll just give you a full refund or a brand new TV of equal value that you paid when you bought it

Really? Hmm that’s a bit of a blow. Damn T&Cs. Perhaps Costco will be worth a visit next time then. I just don’t want to have to cart it home myself.
