Hey all,

I got a white Macbook I had since 29/1/08 and its a lovely bit of kit, about 8 months ago it started to get the wrist rest plastic missing bit along the front edge... Apparently this is covered under warranty but I figured its no big deal and havent taken it back. Now there is a little crack starting to appear on the hinge along the left hand side, about 20mm long and pops up and down under slight flex. Also there is a small section appearing on the screen turning a little cream coloured on a pure white background, almost out of focus which is now bugging me. Also 2 or 3 dead pixels are on it..

I think its due for a warranty return. Now the John Lewis warranty is for parts and labour and lasts 2 years so I am OK there, was just wondering what kind of experiences people have had wit JL. And how quick their turn-around is. It would be nice to have it back for my Wales MTB trip on 3rd July.

Also do I put the original hard drive and ram back in? I swapped the HD out with a 320GB one and upgraded the ram to 4GB. Id like to think they dont bother removing them on a refurb. I can back stuff up no problem but not sure as to what to do.

Cheers.

I can't comment for JL but I understand that cracking is a known fault and is covered by Apple even if it's out of your official one year warranty (yes, I know JL is normally two years). I'd suggest making an appointment at a Genius Bar for the cracking and you can talk to them about the pixels at the same time.

I had an extended warranty on my iPod with JL some years ago.

The service I received was excellent. They sent it off to Apple with a turn around of about a week. Upon the problem reoccuring they replaced it with the newer version.

Unfortunately I cannot comment as to whether Macbooks are any different, I would say pop in and have a chat with the returns desk and see what they say.

The crack will be replaced at an Apple store, under warranty. They will replace the whole top section of plastic so you shouldn't need to replace the original HD or RAM for it.

It's to do with the magnetic lid putting strain on the upper palm rest casing.

Hope this helps :)

i'd just take to to a genius bar (if you live near an apple store) preferably make an appointent if you can, they usually go for a 24 hour repair service at the minute which is far better than JL who will take a week to send it off and then it'll take another week to come back most likely.

I did enquire when my drunken girl friend bashed up my iPhone and they said theyd reconmend taking it to JL, its way past the Apple 1 year guarantee after all...

Take it to an Apple store to be safe.

My Macbook top cover cracked and I took it into JL where it had been purchased. They quoted a maximum of 28 days to get fixed.
23 days later it came back with a US keyboard. They argued with me and told me 'that's how they come now'. I told them to shove it, and they sent it back again, and told me they would make sure it was done as a matter of urgency due to it not being fixed properly the first time.

It came back 27 days later and wouldn't power on....

In the end the girl who I was dealing with got the floor manager to authorise a complete replacement of the laptop, but it still took me 2 months to get a working machine back.
