Johnny Depp is a thoroughly nice chap

He is a complete legend, a lot of actors wouldn't even read that girl's letter, let alone remember it and go to her school for a surprise trip. That and the donation of such a huge amount of money just show what a top bloke he is.

I am pretty sure it happened yesterday and reported today, how fresh do you need it :p

Thanks thundycat for helping to cover up my poor keyboard skillz.

He made a secret visit to Great Ormond Street Hospital in January 2008 to donate £1million to say thank you for saving his daughter's life

From the article linked in the OP. ;)

He visited the school just the other day whilst filming POTC 4 after having received a letter froma girl asking for help in staging a mutiny against the teachers. But the hospital visit was in 2008.

I heard about this ages ago :)

I enjoyed hearing about Russell Crowe (spelling) donating a large sum of money to an Oxfam shop as well :)

J, Depp = Fantastic guy.

I saw some (obviouslty camera phone) video on BBC news this morning. Very cool of him to do that. The little girl who wrote the letter was very good too. A genuinely heartwarming story. Nice to see the Fail got something accurate for a change too.

yea my wife used to be a makeup artist and did a shoot with melB who promised to send an autographed photo to my wifes at the time 7year old kid.

we never recieved it, it was her who offered aswell my wife never asked!

then you get the ones like depp who go out of there wat to give a little joy.
ones like keanu who give a big chunk of there wages to all the staff behind the scenes who worked on the matrix.
Man of the moment Keanu Reeves has shown his generosity by giving away £50 million of his earnings from the Matrix sequels. The 38-year-old decided to hand over the money to the unsung heroes of the sci-fi blockbusters - the costume and special effects teams

its a pitty so many celebes live only inside there own arse although it seems to be the more recent celebs from the last 10 years, it seems every generation they get less and less in touch with reality

I think you'll find the article is about the visit the other day and ALSO contains details of previous surprise visits he has made :p

A shame that many 'celebs' (hate the word tbh) won't even think about donating money.Whats that saying, 'with great power comes great responsibility?', it's nice to see some of those insanely high earnings being used responsibly. Good stuff.
