Johnny Depp is a thoroughly nice chap

I think the thing I like the most is that he's not going around in a prearranged tour for publicity, he does it because he wants to (or if it is publicity, its very well done). He gets to meet normal people in normal surroundings.

I think it's nice not only because he donated money from far away LA but visited them as Jack Sparrow and took time reading to them etc. I know I would love it if I was one of the kids :)

Ages ago A Jolie was filming something around Liverpool and one of the child extras got hurt on the set. He/She had to be taken to Alder Hey hospital and apparently the main star visited without wanting an entrance etc. She immediately tried to settle the bill but then was told that it was state paid. She apparently wopped out her

cheque book..

steady now...

and wrote out £50,000 for the hospital.

Just love stories like this :D Seems like a humble and top chap

Gambon on Top Gear was telling a story of how him and Johnny Depp had a bet to see if they could answer 'Claudia Schiffers knickers' to every question they were asked in an interview :D

I saw this a few days ago with my girlfriend on bbc website. We were both like wow, what a great guy! Made those kids so happy.

It's nice that he put the effort into get himself like a pirate again and not just go in as him self (obviously its a lot more entertaining then)

Always nice to see celebs do good things, I guess you could say like Angelina J does nice things by adopting kids from (wherever she goes)

am i alone in holding back any positive thoughts on jd about what he has done as it's very hard to know his motive? people say he's genuinely nice guy, but he's a very rich actor that will now quite possibly be even richer because of what he's done. similar to angeline jolie, it's great she donated 50k to the hospital but then that's really very little to her in percentage of what she does and will earn. it's easy for them to be nicer then the average waged person. imo a celebrity appearance or donation is not above what i'd expect a wealthy celeb to do so isn't something everyone should jump on and think so highly of the celeb

please don't think that i am viewing these people in any negative way at all, i just think things need to be put into perspective a little bit more. a poor person donating half his pay check, even if it's only say £50, to a charity is far nicer then a rich person donating 1% of theirs even if it's £1 million. i'm not 100% sure but i think peopel on these forums do things for kids all the time such as dmpoole, yet people will think more of jd because of this then they will of dmpoole for his "lesser" contributions etc.

perhaps my point is a little lost and this post will need rewording tomorrow

I think most "celebrities" are fame-seeking weirdos, but find that most good actors/actresses are extremely nice people. Because they, after all, act characters and therefore need to understand people well. Of course there's exceptions to this always but in general I find it's true. After all you generally don't get anywhere in life by being a twit!

My brother bumped into Nicholas Cage at the cinema and asked for his autograph and he stopped, gave it to him and had a little chat :)

I heard about Depp performing as Captain Jack for ill children after the hospital (Great Al street) helped his daughter who was ill.

I'm sure I read somewhere that he didn't see the point in just giving them money, he wanted to really make the children happy.

Problem is drawing the line at where you do give away money...

People like JD tend to give generously to causes where they are personally touched by it and feel they can help which I think is kinda nice, rather than the rich people who give you charities to try and make themselves look good etc.

I'm generally more skeptical but JD is quite well known for his adversion to performing infront of a real audience, etc. so its probably quite a big deal for him doing that.

well keanu earned £70 million from the matrix films and gave £50 million of it to all the people who worked behind the scenes who arent very well paid..

depp may not have given much money away but atleast he went out of his way to do it.

its not like he needs the PR and pirates of the caribean certainly doesnt

The problem being though that a poor person donating £50 is all well and good but do you really think that some child who is in need of a £1million operation is going to be like oh thanks :D i know johnny depp just paid £999,950 for my operation to keep me alive but he is rich anyway so i expect that. At the end of the day it might make you feel better that you have donated the same amount percentage wise to someone who is richer but be under know illusion the people who desperately need the money care about Total amount received as it literally is life or death for these people.
