I want to get into acting but all I've done is gcse drama. I live in central/west London, anyone got good tips for getting into it for just evening classes etc? A google search shows some high prices. Anyone done this and/or have recommendations?

On a serious note, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I understand acting to be a toff's profession these days, so unless West London means Eton or Harrow then you're probably better off just joining your local am-dram society.

Just go to auditions. I don't think learning the theory of acting is going to help. I can learn all about the theory of basket ball and know every type of play possible, I'm still too fat to slam dunk though.

True, but you could land a leading role in 'White Men Can't Jump The Sequel'. Result !!! :p

lolwut?

Harrow School might be 'posh', but have you actually been to Harrow? :D

Oh dear.

I've only done a short course, one evening a week for 6 weeks... actually going to do another starting next week... though I've got no real ambition to be an actor rather I thought it would be something fun to do and probably quite helpful as a life skill in general - i.e. could help with sales, presentations at work through to just being able to carry yourself better in different situations.

I'd assume if you want to be an actor then the sort of thing I did wouldn't be much use as it was just a short beginners course and pretty much everyone else in the class was there for reasons other than wanting to be an actor - people with confidence issues, trouble with public speaking or just doing it for fun.

I'd guess that places like these might be the sort of thing to go for

http://thepoorschool.com/two-year-training-course

http://www.citylit.ac.uk/courses/Drama,_dance_and_speech/607

first seems to be aimed at people who need to work part time still and the second seems to just allow for part time work...

Then again I'm not an actor and so perhaps the other poster who suggested going for auditions might well be right - perhaps short part time course + some amateur drama club and just try auditions (obvs while not ditching the day job yet)

Thanks for that. What you say is exactly what I'm after, just a bit of evening fun and hopefully learn some life skills whilst meeting new people.

It seems difficult though to find a place in south west london through internet searches. I dont fancy going to central london during rush hour regularly. I'm going to have to phone around tomorrow...

I have a script for you to try.

A middle aged man enters a retail unit with a big M above the door. He walks up to an empty counter.

Middle aged man: hi, can I have a quarter pounder with cheese meal please?

You: what drink would you like with that?

Middle aged man: diet coke please?

You: would you like to go large on that?

Middle aged man: no thanks.

You: ok, that'll be £4.50 please.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Good luck.

From knowing a couple of actors, it's like most professions, you can never stop learning and perfecting your craft.

That and at times the money is slow, do a job and then wait 6 months to get that cash through.
