last time I talked to them they said they were civilians, yes they work on base in special trucks but they haven't done RAF training.

a fireman at RAF Lossiemouth, he definitely told me that he was civilian.
Fine the RAF pays him I assume, but he hasn't done basic training or whatever it is, they don't have ranks. Its just a civilian job on an RAF base.

Weird distinction I guess?

He would probably be Defence Fire Service, a MOD firefighter. The DFS personnel train in exactly the same way as Local authority fire and civil defence brigades. RAF personnel tend to specialise in Aircraft Firefighting and crash rescue.

Lossiemouth is the UKs busiest fast jet base, he definitely specialised in aircraft firefighting, he had a huge photo album of crashed planes they happily showed us. He drove the big ass firetrucks with the extra water capacity for airplane fires.

Out here in akrotiri the fireman down the road from me is a WO so i guess they have ranks on some of the bases.

yeh I can see plenty of evidence of that on the web. Plus you couldn't get civilian firefighters to go work abroad.
I'm just confused now. I'll put it down to another unanswered RAF question

Anyone know why RAF ambulances are such weird shapes? The major error in their design seems to be that you can't stand up inside them.

Ask down your local Army Careers Office. They'll tell you either way what jobs you can/can't do in the Army.
