Joining the police

The MET have ratified a possible change in recruitment just days ago where they will only take someone that has been a Special or PCSO for 18 months or someone that has a background/training in law as opposed to Joe Bloggs off the street - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11440985

Didn't the Conservatives spend the last few years slagging off PCSOs? And now it looks like they want PCSOs to be doing more police work.

My girlfriend had gone through all the steps for manchester apart from medical and fitness when she got put on hold whilst they looked at budgets, then just got told 4 months later that all applications have been withdrawn full stop. No force likely to be recruiting for at least a year.

I doubt you would get in before you're 25. The Police is also facing massive cuts and are unlikely to recruit many people any time soon. Which means they can cherry pick you, and the fact that you're so young + have a health condition makes your chances very very low. Concentrate on your A levels and on doing something better imo.

Salary, you start at about 25k if I'm not mistaken and you can work your way up. Sergeants earn just a little more then a constable but when you get to Inspector then you start earning a lot of money. 40-50k (which is really not a lot of money wehn you consider other jobs, I mean, a Tescos/Asdas manager makes 40k and they don't put their life on the line or work night shifts 3 days a week.

Still, is it worth it? I don't think so, pursue a different career in my honest opinion.
Thank you franco and everyone else for all of this advice, it has given me much to think about.:) Looks like I will have to pursue a different career.

Yeah ofcourse, because PCSO's get paid £10 an hour and have little chance of doing overtime, compared to the retardness that is Police officers wages. If during overtime, paying someone £40 an hour to be filling some reports or drinking cups of tea isn't cost effective. (Unless you're in a Labour government) Obviously the conservatives want to slash that off and let the PCSO's deal with it.

You're welcome, and by the way, I am not talking out of my ass, my dad is a Inspector and even he doesn't advise the career for me. 15 years ago? Hell yes, but now, not anymore.

PCSOs do not have the same restrictions as cops do.

I quite like my retarded pay scale the way it is as unlike a PCSO, I can't strike although to be fair I wouldn't even if I could. Secondly, PCSOs cannot be ordered to stay back as cops can when circumstances warrant it and I have been ordered to do say numerous times irrespective of your domestic needs.
