I've offered to help my wife's company with their website.

Main website is Wordpress, runs fine. This is a side website offering specialist products and it's on a Joomla platform.

The developer built it, gave them a Joomla book and left them to it. Then, 4 months later announced she was leaving the industry. The site looks good but underneath...wow

Everything is in a span tags, so <span><a href...><span>text</span></a></span>

the code editor doesn't save or show any formatting.

Urls use different formatting randomly.

You can't enter br tags, it just removes them. If you add a new line it adds in a blank <p> and even if you use shift+enter to move down a line without using a <p> it does show a <br> tag but insisde the paragraph before.

an hour I've been using it, I hate it. Is it really this bad or is it just badly setup? I know it's been around a fair few years now so it can't be completely terrible but I'm thinking of rebuilding it in WP or bootstrap. :(

Edit:

New issues..

Can't update, throws an infinite loop error, google brings up a fix I can try.

Uploading a pdf that is 4.5mb in size, choose file, max size says 10mb, start upload....this file is too large to upload...

now I need to mess around trying to change upload_max_filesize which I don't think I've got access too :( cry

Port it to wordpress? Assuming it's not too complicated.

I've only looked at joomla once and ran screaming. Just couldn't get my head around it.

Yeah that is an option, just a drawn out one as I am doing this, their SEO and PPC as a favour.

I need to get some login details for the hosting to see if I can sort the file size upload issue otherwise some of the work is a no go.

Joomla is a bit of a mare to get your head round at first, but it's very well featured and customisable once you figure it out.

The back end is an utter car crash in UX terms though, no doubt about it. I've set up some WordPress sites before and it annoyed the hell out of me how hard it was to do anything outside what it wants you to do.
