Name me the best ones, for a starter. I would like english voiced game if possible and a nice turn based battle system that wont be overcomplicated if possible. Had a peek at Grandia 3 and that looked nice and combat looks decent effects and varied and turn based.

Cheers.

Valkyrie Profile 2 Silmeria (side-scroller and possibly best graphics iv seen in a ps2 rpg graphics style)

Shadow Hearts: Covenant (on a par with original, and that was ****** awesome! though graphics dont look as good, excellent graphics in SH:C)

Star Ocean: Till the end of time (great story! and mahoosive)

though of these 3 SHC is only real turn based. All are quality imo :)

theres also DQ VIII - from what i played, really impressive story and graphics (and npcs) but the random battles and kinda bland environments/towns did my head in

i'd stick Final Fantasy XII in with them as well excellent game....but you dont want a FF as to which is the best its between Star ocean and Shadow Hearts Convenant...

Dark Cloud 2
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Rogue Galaxy (not really turn based, but not overcomplicated)
.Hack// GU vol 1
Shadow Hearts, they're all decent
Xenosaga
Suikoden series, go straight to 5 (imo)

Don't forget the PS1 titles.. specifically Chrono Trigger.

Looks very nice but hows the combat i.e what do u do for attacks, is it combos in a beat em up like right up X or whatever or just 1 button for each diff attack cos i probably suck now with learning combo presses for attacks lol.

Should also mention i loved to bits zelda link to the past on snes. For its simple interface inventory and gameplay etc as well as awesome world and story. :)

So i probably would like a jrpg with a simple interface and not loads of menus and windows and not collection hundreads of things just a few like in zelda. Obviously not all games will be like that but if there is one let me know.

Btw is there any jrpg thats fully english voiced i.e no text to read just listen to english speech all way through? I like this in pc point and click adv games and hoped something like this would be in a jrpg, probablys hoping too much but still i ask.

Tend to also like 2d like zelda and ff7 style i.e drawn 2d backgrounds with 3d characters. So i can see a lot of the game area from above. Not vital i just thought id mention it incase theres some choices for that criteria for me.

Real time combat in Star Ocean and you can switch between characters easily. Of course you still have items, potions etc you take. Each button is a different type of attack strong, normal etc so you dont have to learn combos (i think)
As usual the important stuff is in voice but a lot of it is text as well.
if you decide to get it let me know ;)

Odin Sphere dont like the look of that its a side scroller. :(

Edit

Star ocean 3 (presume u meant that one as 4th isnt out yet and isnt for ps2 i think) looks nice enough tho bit low detail on the polys for the models. But action looks nice enough and cool.

Unfortunately nothing like this exists and even with technologies today i.e. Blu-Ray, its not going to be possible for a very long time. Text is an integral part of RPGs, especially JRPGs with their heavy focus on storytelling. And as for complete English voice acting, that itself is impossible and extremely difficult when you consider it from the developer's point of view. JRPGs have their own standards and traditions compared to Western made RPGs, so its something you will have to deal with.

a lot of decent ones are already mentioned by other posters, and if it wasn't for your requirements, I would highly recommend the Xenosaga series (Episodes 1, 2 and 3).

You should definately go for Persona 3 and 4 though as they have favourable reviews all around. Just remember to go for the Persona 3 "FES" if you want the third game.

I have to disagree with you on the full voice acting. The longest Journey on pc had full English voice acting and its a 40+ hrs long game and absolutely loads of dialogue. So its possible.

I will peek on utube for xenosaga, i remember liking the animé of it from trailer and hoped to get it one day but ain't been able to yet.

Persona 4 ill try to get probably it looks nice and battle system looks simple but nice effects etc and i like the whole life sim bit of it.

Sorry I should have made it much clearer, but I was refering to just JRPGs on that subject.

Anyways since you like the whole 2D background, 3D characters aspect, or vice versa, only other way I can see for more JRPGs in this style is either games from the PS1 era, or maybe even dive onto the PSP or DS as there are loads there. Would something like the Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1 original or the GBA/DS versions) series draw your attention?

EDIT - Someone has already mentioned Odin Sphere before, and I would personally recommend that as well. It may be a side scrolling hack and slash game, but it combines that with RPG elements i.e. upgrades, leveling up etc. Plus it does actually have full voice acting, both Japanese and English which is changeable at will. Wonderful story and beautiful 2D sprite graphics.

Got ff 7 8 and 9 already dont want another ff game.

It's not like any of those games really, different levelling up, combat, storyline, mini-games etc.

The only similarities are the name, a few enemies and that the main character has a sword. It's worth picking up for less than a fiver. :)

wahey you went with my choice. But unless your American 4 isnt out yet.

Final Fantasy 10 took a new direction on PS2. It does have english voice for the most part. And if you want the BEST PS2 JRPG, then Final Fantasy 10 is just that.

I also liked Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne which is a dark RPG, but i cant remember whether it was fully voiced. It was a while ago since I played it.
