Hello all.

I've got a letter from my prospective employer offering me the job I went in for and provisionally start a week today, hoorah. But was just wondering what you do about signing off JSA?

I've been 'on' JSA for just over a month (16th Feb to be exact is the first day I went in, been in on the 29th and thats it), received one payment and I'm due to sign on on Wednesday.

If I call today and confirm I've found a job will they tally up any benefit I'm entitled to and pay it this week? I could ideally do with the money before starting next week for travel purposes.

Cheers

Not 100% sure but i think if you notify them that you are starting work they will pay you up until the day before you actually start and then end the claim.

Make a call to check though :)

Isn't it on the back of the card you have to take to them everytime you go to the Job Centre - you tick a box and hand it in or has that procedure changed. Date of work is on there if I remember correctly - start date that is.

Called them and signed off, should get my final payment this week, sorted.

5 star thread. Would read again.

Congrats on the job. ;)

LMAO seven minutes between starting this thread and sorting it out yourself.

Worst 'ooo look at me I was on JSA but have a job now' thread ever!

Only kidding...well done, Britain needs more like you, etc.

You should get a bit more too I think, although I'm not sure why. When I signed off, I got my final payment as well as about £150 extra for some reason. I asked them why I received the extra but they said it was fine.

OP: tell them you need money for some clothes for an interview. get the cash first then sign off :)

Isn't that only for New Deal customers? I had that allowance back in 2003, something like £85 towards interview clothes at participating stores, Burtons being one. I think it was only applicable if you've been on JSA for something like 3 or 6 months.

Congrats on the job Rick.

You an get a new suit from Tesco for about £35. It looks fine!

Phone them, Tell about the job offer and the lack of funds for transport.

In most instances they'll give you a months bus pass.
This is worth doing. I was on the dole for two months a few years ago and they gave me the dough to buy a one month travelcard when I took up a job. You might as well use these benefits if you are going to be paying tax for the rest of your life.
