JSa + Work Advice

So I'm claiming JSA to keep me afloat whilst I'm searching for a job, all has been going fine.

I did a day's work for my old boss last week and I am now owed a bit of cash, however I'm not entirely sure how to get paid without being classed as self employed as that's not really what I want to do. I know I can work up to 16 hours a week, I know that whatever I earn gets taken off of my JSA payments (minus £5).

I just want to get paid for this one off job, pay the tax for it so I don't have to do a self assessment tax thing and just continue as I am. I spoke to my careers advisor lady this morning and she wasn't very clear about it, in fact she told me to go and check the "business link" website which as far as I can decipher is just information for self employed persons which is not what I want.

Am I looking in to this too much? Can they pay the tax for me? Has anyone been in a similar situation that can shed some light?

Why did you do some work for your old boss as surely he's the reason your on JSA?

Well yea, he couldn't afford to keep me on and it seemed better to do a bit of work and get some cash rather than sitting around doing nothing but search for jobs. I am regretting it now though.

Can't help with your question but could you tell me, when claiming JSA do you have to go into the job center every 2 weeks still?

Yea I have to sign on every fortnight in order to get paid, have to show them my "work diary" which just states that I have been searching/applying for jobs.

Good point, I hadn't thought about calling them as I expected the JSA people to actually know what they are talking about.

cant you just take the cash in hand and be quiet like 1000s of other British citizens, bit late now ?

They won't pay me under the table as it's a reasonably substantial amount and I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it anyway

Just spoke to the accounts lady at my old work, she is going to pay me via PAYE, stick emergency tax on it and I'm not going to do any other work for them.

Does that sound ok?
