So after watching the 2012 film (which I thought was fantastic), I am after finding out more about him and I want to read some literature/comics about him.

My questions is though where do I start?

Can anyone point me in the right direction of what material I should get and where to start?

Thanks.

Judge Dredd : The Complete Case Files graphic novels would be the place to start, they reprint almost everything from when it first started in 2000AD.

I find the collected works are pretty good, you can either start with the Complete Case Files series which are the comics from each issue of 2000AD or you can go for individual collections such as The Cursed Earth, Judge Death, The Day The Law Died, The Dark Judges and many many more.

Actually tempted to pick these up myself now, only about a tenner each from amazon and a lot of reading. 21 of them so far from what I can see.

Cursed Earth, Judge Death, anything Brian Bolland illustrated. I've still got every 2000AD from Issue 1 until 1000 stored in the loft at my parents.

I had a look in Waterstone's at lunch and they have the complete works vol.1.

Might start at this.

Will look into all the other suggestions as well.

Best stories I've read are The Dark Judges, Judge Dredd in Oz, The Cursed Earth, The Judge Child, Block Mania and the Apocalypse War. I did stop reading some time ago though...

I thought the film was brilliant. Even better in 3D. There are rumours/campaigns for a sequel which at one point looked way unlikely.

If its just Dredd then go with the complete case files and try and stay in order, you will notice how Dredd has evolved over time, does make interesting reading from start to current.

On the film, apparently they where hoping on a trilogy, was rumoured to have Death in part 3. Sure I read somewhere that it had very good dvd sales, so its fingers crossed for a squeal.

America was the best writing IMO.
Judgement on Gotham had a great crossover story
Original Judge Death some amazing Bolland artwork particularly where Anderson kicked a tech through the wall dividing the pane she was in into the next pane.

Then the Dark Judges with the voted as greatest single pane in comic history - when Dredd punches Judge Fear saying "gaze into the fist of Dredd!"

Bolland is an absolute legend, the best 2000AD artist by a country mile IMO, really liked Bernadanelli's stuff on Inferno as well, Artie Gruber was awesome.

If you go for the case files, stick with them. The first couple are generally poor, but then the quality improves dramatically. They had the first five on sale on the kindle a while back for less than 2 quid each, total bargain.

I liked Judgement Day.

Some poiniont lines within,
'Should have promised her too Joe.'
'...his best cadet... bar none.'
'As senior judge present, I am giving the order, BURN THE WALL!'

I did the same thing after watching Dredd, I've gone out and bought 1-12 Complete Case files, as well as the Judge Dredd America story. I absolutely flew through them, could not get enough. Might need to buy a couple more actually...

I remember reading a lot of those stories the first time around and I wish I would have kept my 2000AD collection.

On a slightly different note, there is an official petition to gage fan interest in a sequel to the movie, so please sign up if you want more :).

Edit: Curse you, you bunch of Muties! I looked up the case files and have put in an early hint to my wife for a birthday present :D.

Loved judge dredd since I was a kid, bought 2000ad every week and watched the 2012 film the other night. Thought it was descent but didn't do megacity 1 any justice...dare I say the original film was better in this regard. However thought the rest was pretty good and genuinely want to get back into dredd and buy all the comics again. 2000ad is definitely the best comic series ever.

Wernt there rumours of a rougue troopers film getting made?

Glad to hear someone else say this. The tone in the new film was all wrong. Too nihilistic and no satire. And the lawmasters just looked :(

Various different 2000AD properties have been suggested for film production but the problem always seems to be that no studio has the budget to do it as an R rating. (Which carries a much bigger stigma than an 18 cert does in the UK)
