jumping revs problem

I am having a bit of a problem with my car, the revs of the engine seems to jump increase too much when i press the accelerator, in that this jumps far more then it should then falls again even though i have the accelerator pressed down. Does anyone know what could be causing this? My car is a mitsubishi carisma 1.6 glxi

time to decide if the car is worth fixing now.. its a 1998 carisma 1.6 with 132K miles on it... would you keep driving till the clutch goes and get a replacement car (spend about £1500-2000 max) or just get the clutch replaced?

Thanks guys... the fault is intermitten. I can start the car, stick it in 4th gear on a level road and drive off without the car stalling.
The rev seems to rise rapidly every so often when i press the accelerator.
