Got a BFG 7800 PCI-E being displayed on a Acer 1916w.

I've waited to talk about this as i though it was my old CRT, but with a new TFT its still doing it.

I've tried lots of Nvidia updates but none have helped, i've never Oc'd the card.

Any help or any info would be great as every thing else is spot on, but this.

Best way to describe it is like a ripple on the screen as i move uyp and down. :confused:

Yes it'll be an ingame setting though check it's not forced off in the control panel as well. It causes "tearing" which sounds similar to your description.
 
Another vote for it being v-sync

Its not on by default in games so you'll have to turn it on yourself, but i used to get it all the time

Especially with tft's where the refresh rate is at 60Hz. With your card your gonna be getting good frame rates mate, and if the frames per second exceeds your refresh rate, you get whats called 'tearing' where the screen cant keep up with the fps the cards outputting. V-sync ensures that the game caps itself to your monitors refresh rate

So with vsync turned on, your fps will be locked at the monitors refresh rate, or the maximum fps that the game can smoothly generate on your setup.

The human eye cant see more than 60fps anyway so theres no performance deficit.
 
Hi, thanks for the info, but it wasn't v-sync.

Adfter this i went home and had a fiddle round.

Loaded Doom III, problem was very bad.

So i went into the windows GFX setttings, and loaded the Doom III profile, tried it again and it was perfect.

The only difference in the two settings was:

Anisotropic filtering.

This was turned off in the Doom III setting, so i put it like that on standard, tried various FPS and its worked for them all.

Which is great, and i thankyou for putting me on the lines of trying this configs but why would that be causing me problems?

On.

I tried turning it off 1st, but it didn't do anything.

Thats when i went and had a look about in the profiles
 
could be a combination of Vsync and AF perhaps, since your basically asking your card to run at your screen refresh rate regardless of all other settings, i personally never heard a card us vsync properly so its pretty pointless in all truth, what purpose is it supposed to serve anyone? :confused:
 
V-sync works for me, it prevents tearing (two or more frames being displayed at the same time). Best to have it on unless it causes problems like sluggish response from controllers (screen seems to lag behind your input.)

I didn't think V-sync could affect TFTs. It affects CRTs because they draw the screen gradually, top to bottom; if the graphic card starts on the next frame before the screen draw completes, there's a join/tear where you can see the difference. TFTs (I thought) draw the whole screen at once so aren't affected by high frames/second.

And also, AF shouldn't be part of this problem, AF's a textured surface thing not a screen thing. Do you have Advanced options enabled in the Nvidia control panel? Does anything like "triple buffering" change in the profiles?

you need to get your eyes examined cuz my eyes can see an infinite frame rate looking at the real world. there is no such thing as framrate in the real world hence why things seem so smooth in reality than in games.

There also and infinite number of threads on the web about this debate, so lets not go down that path just yet... :p We might not necessary be able to say what fps we see but we can "feel" the benefit of higher fps over 60fps.
