Our new build looks to have a junction box with a light sensor by the front door that controls the outdoor light which is either permanently on (by switch) or turns on automatically when it gets dark as the light doesn't have this built in.

I'm looking to buy something similar for the back but Google is giving me nothing - does anyone know what I should be searching for? Seems like an obvious search but I'm failing!

I'm really surprised that people leave their lights on all through the night. I know it your choice but it seems a waste of power to light an area (porch, garden, etc) whilst you sleep and any burglary deterrent effect would be lessened, as opposed to sudden flare of light from a PIR activated spot lamp. Each to their own though.

We have a light that comes on when it gets dark, and just switch it off as we go to bed. Then when we come down in the morning we just flick it on again - it'll come on for a bit if it is still dark or won't come on at all if it is light enough.

Best of both worlds.

We do sometimes leave it on all night though - the wife sometimes forgets if she is last to go upstairs - and quite a few of our neighbours do too. Our streetlights all turn off at midnight, and the porch lights from the few houses actually do a reasonable yet unintrusive job of lighting the street.
