A postman who advised people how to stop junk mail being delivered to their home could lose his job after bosses suspended him for misconduct.
Roger Annies composed and circulated a leaflet about the Royal Mail's opt-out clause for unsolicited mail during his rounds in Barry, south Wales.
........

linky

personally i say good on him. i hate receiving unaddressed mail. and unless i am REALLY bored, it goes straight in the bin.

Reading the article that was linked to the story on how to avoid junk mail looked interesting too... Hope his round petition to keep him on, looks like the local councilor is bheind him too.

Very glad it's hit the national press as it will hopefully mean there is enough pressure brought on it to keep the guys job. Personally I think they have just shot themselves in the foot, what was a local leaflet being sent round has now been publicised to the nation as a good way of getting rid of junk!

I hate Junk mail. But I am not in the least surprised that this postie is facing the sack for what he did. His actions were taking business away from his employers; did he really expect them to do nothing about it??

And just typical for a local councilor to jump on the bandwagon .

By the way a big thanks to my postie. Same dude for over 8 years he is excellent. I cannot post what he does but i have Never missed a parcel or had anything dodgey go on with my post. he goes out of his way to make sure things are as easy as possible for you. Top man, Top postie.

This should stop unaddressed leaflets but, it seems, it won't stop stuff addressed to "The Occupier", which RM are "legally obliged" to deliver.

Well I can understand why RM would be annoyed with him. I'm assuming he delivered the leaflets along with the regular post, while he was doing his job. If he had done it seperately from his rounds I don't think they would have any basis to fire him.

I expect it is in his contract. Interfering in a companies business whilst being employed by them will result in a sacking in almost every single case. Anything that could lose the company earnings or lower there image will be against his contract weaver done in his own time or not.

I always find it highly amusing to play with the people sending it, works best if they have included a freepost return envelope.

Rip all your junk mail up, shred it into as many pieces as possible and include any other random things from round your house, tea bags, used plasters, some heavy things can be good. Pop it back in the pre-paid envelope and ding dong the spam is gone!

Also when you get those calls that say "hi can I speak to <insert random name>", imediately say to them "hang on I'll just get him", check back with the phone every couple of hours to see if they are still there. :)

But if it is a service the Post Office provide then surely he is boosting the companies profile by advertising one of their services?

Me, I just bin the junk mail and politely tell the caller/seller person that I do not want disturbing and then hang up. Registering with the tps helps of course, not much but more than normal.
