Just 54 minutes of actual football

Hardly surprising, been saying for years if you have an independent timekeeper who stops the clock when the ball isn't in play all the timewasting will stop nearly immediately.

But then you might need to reduce the 90 mins to 80 or less... otherwise with the amount ifganes each season it could be exhausting.

Also time wasting allows players a moments rest as well so I'm not sure it would be eliminated entirely.

No different than it has been for a long time. Italia'90 or perhaps USA'94 I remember they used to put this stat up and it was always under an hour.

Been saying for years I would favour 30min halves with stop clock but I can't see it being done. One of the issues I guess is the technology not being in place for lower-tier games where it's basically a ref with a watch and his own judgement at the moment.

This is how football has always been. People surprised there isn't 90 minute of play?

How do you plan on having a 60 minute stop clock for the thousands of games that happen up and down the country every week, professional, amateur and recreational?

No need to ruin football by creating 2 tiers. 60 minute professional games and 90 minutes for everyone else?

How much is a stop watch? A quid?

A stop watch? That already exists for added time. All solved then?

When I played football recreationally, one of the players was the ref. Want to invent a different football format where there is a stop clock? Go ahead, it will be adopted by no one.

I find it hard to believe that anyone who actually plays football regularly would promote this idea. What's next, timeouts? Kicking the ball out strategically to stop the clock? The game will massively slow down as well as there can't be a punishment for being slow.

I already acknowledged that lower tier football would have a problem and that being a blocker.

As for the punishment for being slow, this is handled in US sports by having a playclock or similar. The game clock is stopped, but you must restart play within x seconds or be reprimanded.

The issue with football is it is all subjective, the game gets delayed and the ref doesn't allow enough stoppage time, then when someone is time-wasting again it is subjective, the ref decides if he thinks it is 'too much' rather than being empirically measured.

Its almost like this hasn't always been the case and yet football is still the most popular sport in the world.

Of all the issues with the rules, one that wasn't one until someone published a stat is the least of them!

Does it exist? Have you ever seen 15 minutes being added on each half then?

This doesn't surprise me and it's one of the most irritating parts of the modern game. Commentators and the like call it 'game management', no it's time wasting and cheating. My absolute favourite is where the ball has gone out for a goal kick, the keeper takes forever to get the ball back, then takes forever to walk to the edge of the 6 yard box, the defenders get into position like he's going to play short then he waves them up the field, another 15 seconds whilst they get into position then he kicks it.

Down to the refs to manage it. They will book a goalkeeper in the 85th minute for time wasting when he'd been doing it for the entire game. They don't have the balls to send someone off for time wasting.

Plus they don't add enough time on for things like subs, players take longer than 30 seconds to trudge off in the 93rd minute.

I would love to know how much football was played in the City vs PSG game last night. Is there any way to find out?
