went in the apple shop in meadowhall the other day and had a look at macs(desctops) and was wondering what i cant do on a mac when compared to my regular windows pc.
im after a new pc and was going to build one but i liek the simplicity of imacs but dont know if i can do everything on one that i can on my normal windows based pc.
i mainly use my pc for music/movies and tv and general web browsing but i also sometimes play games so want something that can handle the top games a playable frame rates on a high resolution monitor.

so is there a mac for me or am i better off sticking with what i know and building a new windows based pc?

Theres the problem right there. Unfortunately most games manufacturers still don't make games for macs.

You can use bootcamp and run Windows ona a mac now so you can play games but I don't think the GFX cards currently in use are up to running the latest games at high res.

In a word; no.

You could play the games of Yesteryear at that resolution (BF2142, CS:S) but you won't get decent framerates from the latest games on an iMac because the graphics card is pityful.

If you don't mind playing at 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 1024 (max) then you'd be fine in other aspects (with the iMac), just don't expect it to run Crysis.

For music, movies and web browsing - the mac wins hands down in my opinion.

That is, of course, unless you enjoy lots of Firefox add-ons and what not, that don't seem to be supported on the Mac. If you want to keep your browsing simple, then the Mac is the winner there.

Games, are a huge problem. The graphics card in the iMac are poor. They'll struggle with current games and they'll struggle further still with new games. There are new Mac games coming out but they'll need to be amazingly optimized to do anything worthwhile.

There are very few things you can't do on a Mac, that you can do on a PC. Whilst there are obviously softwares that are made for PC and sometimes have no real equivalent (i.e. Microsoft Money) there are many, many different open source Mac products which are extremely good and better than their PC 'opponents'. It's just about finding them really, which is a Google away.

was actually wondering about graphics card upgrades.cant you just bung an 8800 ultra in there or are graphics cards other than the ones they sell with the system not supported?
Nope.

Only Macs that are user upgradable are the Mac Pro, and then you'd need a specially flashed BIOS for OS X to use the 8800 Ultra.

Just go build a PC.
