hi, im a bit new to building computers. just wondered does it matter if the the chipset is different but the sockets are the same. i.e the socket is 1155 and the chipset on the motherboard is z87 but i have a intel i5 1155 h61 chip. will this still work even if i have the same scoket but different chipset. thanks.;)

Hi and welcome to the forums. :)

I think you are getting a tad confused. The chipsets for socket 1155 are P67, Q67, H67, Z68, H61, B75, H77, Q77 and Z77. These are all on the motherboard not the cpu. If you have a socket 1155 i5 cpu then it must be a i5 Sandybridge core (2 series) such as the 2500k or Ivybridge core (3 series) such as the 3570k. As long as the motherboard is socket 1155 then a socket 1155 cpu will work in it (with some exceptions, see below) no matter what the chipset is on the motherboard. Some of the earlier boards such as P67, Z68, Q67, H67 and H61 may possibly not support Ivybridge or may need a bios update to run a Ivybridge cpu as they were originally launched with the Sandybridge cpu's. The best way to check is to go to the manufacturers website and check the cpu support list for the board you want to change to.

Alternatively, post up here what cpu you have and what board you want to stick it in and we can tell you if it will work.

thank you very much. :) i have at the moment a i5 3570 1155 and am just looking for a gaming motherboard around £150-£200. i was looking at the G1 sniper 2 but cant find that board anywhere. also a decent power supply around 650w.

no competitor talk or suggestions please.

PSU wise, any of these would be good:-

NZXT Hale Power 90+ 650W '80 Plus Gold'
Semi Modular Power Supply The OEM is Superflower, one of the worlds top manufacturers and it has a single 54A (648w) 12v rail.

Superflower Golden Green HX650 Not modular but still a quality unit.

What's the rest of your components as you may not need anywhere near 650w?

thanks, my system ATM is not that bad but compared to others it fairly small. it runs battlefield 4, cod 4, and other games well. recently had the system cleared because of a root kit device had embedded it self into my system. complete **** up.
motherboard:Gigabyte GA-H61M-USB3V Intel Socket 1155 (upgrading hopefully to a bigger board)
GPU: nvidia GTX 660
CPU: i5 3570
power supply: CIC 500w (upgrade as cable are to short)
RAM: 8gb crucial ballistix
2x500gb hard drive (hoping to upgrade to SSD)
case: Corsair Obsidian 750D Gaming Black Full Tower Case

Your current psu is extremely poor and should be changed asap. The psu is the single most important component in a pc and should not be skimped on. Cheap psu's have terrible internals, are innefficient, will never get anywhere near their stated output on the all important 12v rail and if they fail, could take other components with them. With the spec you posted you could run that off a quality 450w psu but i would go for a 500-550w one to allow for a future gpu upgrade. Here are a couple of suggestions:-

Superflower Golden Green HX550w @£59.99

NZXT Hale Power 90+ 550W '80 Plus Gold' @£39.95
