If you have access to another Mac with a recent version of OS X that has App Store access, you can download the installer from that, use a USB stick and put the installer image on that using createinstallmedia.

Alternatively, I know the Apple Stores have images for systems that they apply when those systems come in for repair. Could try them, though I'm not sure what they'd do for you in that instance.

Get a friend with a Mac and download a recent version of OS X. Failing that, drop me a trust and I'll help :).

thank you for the offers guys :) i managed to find an old hdd from my old mac and am now creating a usb
thank you for your help

Just boot into the recovery mode and download it from Apple. Most simple and easy way to go about it. The recovery mode is built into a chip no the machine and not on the HDD/SDD.

On a tangent but you should pimp that thing out - stick the optical drive in a caddy and use the free'd up space to put an SSD with the OS/progs on, then use the mechanical drive for photos/music etc.
