Well It will be here tomorrow.

I was wondering, what are the main advantages and disadvantages of installing Linux onto the PS3, and is it hard to do?

Thanks in advance!

No, it's actually very easy.
It has no real benefits now that you can watch DivX on the PS3.

So, what will be the best way to watch media from my PC on my PS3 then, was thinking of hooking it up in the living room, but first I thought I was gonna use it in my bedroom?

Those with 40Gb PS3 should possibly think about getting a larger HDD for the console. The PS3 makes a 10Gb partition for Linux so thats a quarter of the HD gone already, dont forget some of the HD space is used by the PS3 itself. Its an easy process to upgrade your drive, but if you dont think you'll miss the space than its quite a nice thing to install.

Cool, you have been most helpful. In regards to the External harddrive, would it be a case of plugging it into PC copying said media then plugging it into PS3.

Yep, it's that simple.
I'd say USB Stick is the easiest method though (and cheapest).

You could also use TVersity to stream media from your PC to your PS3, will also transcode stuff on the fly as well.

My current solution is windows media player library sharing. Easy to set up with windows media player 11 and it basically streams avis over a wireless or wired network perfectly. If you really want to you can also use it to copy media files from your pc to the PS3 harddrive. Tversity WAS useful as it transcoded avis to a format the PS3 could play - however that feature is now pointless as the PS3 can play avis now and windows media sharing is more reliable.
