Just Bought A PS3

Two years ago (February 2006), I traded in my PS2 + 14 games for £96 (gift card), with the intention of buying a PS3 later that year. The PS3 never came that year so I never bothered.

Fast forward to today. I read on said gift card that it expires after 2 years . Great, I'm thinking, just lost £96. Just popped in to town and went to the shop in question with Gift Card, Reward Card and (very faded) trade-in receipt. I'm told by the Deputy Manager that there is no money on it as it has expired. I'm nearly in tears. :(

He phoned head office and they managed to get me the money back after a bit of persuasion from the Deputy Manager. Suffice to say it was a close one! Very grateful to the guy so the Dundee branch of a competitor if you ever read this - your deputy manager is a dude!

So here I am with PS3, R6V2 and GT5... Good purchase? £319.99 less £96.

What are the first things I should do when I bother to turn it on?

Where you nearly in tears? Or are you exaggerating for comedic effect?

In my head I am picturing a great triumph over adversity and a large corporate giant by yourself. Or I picture a little boy crying in the shops so they just gave you the console to get rid of you.

Seems like a damn good purchase to me, and good to see some proper customer service does still exist.

First thing to do when you switch it on, play it ;). Or more helpfully, get it online, update it to latest firmware, setup 3 PSN accounts (UK, JAP, USA), get some demos downloading, play some games!

the thing I wish I did first was to install a bigger HD. I'm now wanting to upgrade as it seems many games require installation which will quickly fill the 40GB drive. AFAIK game saves cant be backed up so it will mean loosing all my saves :(

You an back up game saves with the ps3 backup program (I think). I own nearly all the installable games that came out recently and am no way near filling the HDD yet (but I have a 60GB). If you couldn't retain game saves I doubt people would be upgrading their HDD.

Games saves are not deleted when you delete game installs. Just back them up and reinstall them once you have installed a new HDD

so can they be backed up to a USB stick? I'd just want to buy an new internal drive and not a USB one

if he gets a lot of psn content that'll put him over 60gb. like it did me, but then i already had a 250gb drive anyway.

Only if he keeps demos and trailers I think. I am fairly convinced I own more PSN content than most (paid stuff) and I have not filled mine yet, plus I have movies and stuff on mine.

Off the top of my head I have 33 downloadable games on their, 4 demos, about 5gb of movie files and game saves since day 1, about 5 installs for games (varying from 1gb to 5gb).

I normally delete the demos after I buy the retail game though and only watch the HD movie trailers once or twice before deleting.

I just think it is silly to think about upgrading the HDD before you have even started to use it. I am sure the vast majority are no way near filling their HDD nor will they ever even consider it.

Edit: I am just playing devil's advocate, I realise I will be "forced" to upgrade mine a lot sooner than most 40gb owners!!

i have no movies music or game trailers on mine. fair enough i have quite a few demos, but the large percentage of it is down to full installs.

possibly. bit worrying when you think two games can take up roughly a 1/3 of the available space on a 40gb console though

It was in the shop! ;)

Yup!

Haha nah I am not quite young enough to be the little boy crying in the shops but £96 isn't an insignificant amount of money to me. I guess it was, as someone below you said, an example of good customer service still existing!

OK going to get all my updates done and stuff and I need to buy me some Pro Ev action! Excited!

Mate, if the £96 quid made you cry you will be in even more pain if you cough up good money for Pro Evo on PS3 this year. It is not great, by any means :(

(I was joking above, I appreciate £96 is a lot of money for most people, just I ain't seen a grown man cry for a while :) )

Like some have said a bigger HDD is useful but not necessary, and you can always upgrade easy enough at a later date as long as you have an EXT HDD to back up the data to. If not in a rush for an extra controller i would import a dual shock 3 from either the US or Asia, the PAL release date is supposed to be early May but nothing confirmed as yet.
Sign up to the PSN and stick your ID in the PSN ID thread (link in PS3 Faqs or search for it), once you have updated your PS3, there is another update coming on Tuesday with new features and a new PSN store, so you will have to do it then. There are quite a few demos on the PSN so give some of them ago also try some of the PSN game demos especially Pixel Junk monsters and super stardust HD.
One last thing get yourself Uncharted! One of the best single player game ive played for along time.

The game saves are saved in a different location to the game data, if you look in the XMB in the game bit there is a section called game data and one called game saves, so just delete the game data ones.
