Just got fallout 2 off steam, ive never played any of the older games but i figure fallout 2 would be easier to get into than the first as its a bit newer. Any starting tips? how hard exactly is it to get into?

Also does anyone have any other reccomendations for old school RPGs for my laptop, wouldnt mind trying a few to play when im not at home.

I don't think I can help you much with fallout 2, I think the very beginning is a bit boring (the cave full of rats, someone can correct me if I'm wrong) but it does pick up when you get out of that bit.

There are a lot of good old school rpg's available on GOG:

http://www.gog.com/en/frontpage/

The better ones on there include baldurs gate, baldurs gate 2 and planescape torment. Both very good old school rpg's :)

thanks man, well after a lot of fiddling about ive got fallout 2 running in widescreen (widescreen seems to of given it a slight performance hit strangely)

Seems a bit complicated/hard atm ive been told to go somewhere but have no pipboy or anything yet, dont know where im going, my attacks on the scorpions/bug things in the temple place always miss and my health is low already after about 2 fights and cant seem to replenish it

want to stick with it though.

edit: now the only door that will let me advance is locked what am i ment to do :S

The widescreen mod is a must, played it again fairly recently and loved this change.
If you can get pasted the dated graphics (Personally i love isometric games) then it is one of the best games produced ever.

You wont be able to get through that door without completing the temple quest (my memory is a little hazy). Best bet trying to go for eniemies head and hope it connects or the torso for a better hit chance.

The early game is pretty hard so you might have load a few times

From what I remeber check the pots for some explosives.

To get your health back, use the wait till fully healed (T is default I think!)

Btw, it is a long and confusing game all I can say is SAVE SAVE SAVE, steal ANYTHING you can even for caps. And explore. Dont worry about the time limit you have to be really bad to hit it!

When you are in the temple i think there are 2 doors that you need to open:

1) Is locked, i think its coded so irreguardless of your lockpick skill you can pick the lock....think you just hit "2" on the keyboard and click on the door.

2) The door is sealed, you need to use some arm some explosives in your inventory then drop them on the floor.....and RUN!

The best advise I can give, is not be a lone ranger, keep your companions.

I on the other hand, killed all my freinds for their weapons etc... get to the last boss on the ship to find that he cant be killed 1vs1, he's too strong.

Your meant to have keep your companions, inorder to fight him.

Guys guys...

Don't give him advice unless you're sure - you will only confuse him lol.

Caps (bottle caps) is the currency from Fallout 1.
The cave at the start with the rats is from Fallout 1.

Don't give him spoilers!!! (the ending isn't on a ship btw).

Best advice I can give you tom is to read the readme a bit if you haven't played that type of game before. There are multiple ways to solve most problems depending on what your skills are.

Also I would download the unofficial patch which fixes thousands of bugs left in the bought versions.

Finally...buy and complete Fallout 1 before attempting Fallout 2, it's not a continuation of the story but they certainly blend at points and if you have played the first one it will really add to the experience.

This is the Fallout 2 unofficial patch which is pretty much essential!

I wish I was just playing this for the first time again. You're going to lose some hours to it over the next few weeks.

heh got into it a bit more, cheers guys, in the second town now so will see what quests are about, tbh i dont mind the graphics at all i like the style :)

While playing this again recently i really think this was a lot more tense than the later games (as much as i love them).

The best bit for me was New Reno and getting hold of the car.

only thing im finding quite hard is you have to think for yourself to find where to go, like theres no arrow on a map showing you where to go like in fo3, no detailed quest logs or anything, gonna try and stick with it though :) next to play is planescape torment.

any chance of getting a save game just after finishing the temple or whatever ? i just cant be bothered to do it.

You have to pick your character stats before doing the temple, it's not like Oblivion, you can't change it before you leave the temple...you don't have to kill everything it only takes a few minutes if you run through it ignoring everything.

finding it a bit hard, like ive done the quests in the starting village, elder says ive got to go to klameth, im there and i dont know what to do there, ive got one quest and thats to rescue smiley but i cant go in them caves without some rubber boots on yet, other than that im lost :S
