Just about to start fallout 3 this afternoon but i would liek to know whether there are any essential patches/mods that would really make it better before i start.

Also i heard about a high res texture pack or soemthing?

cheers.

There is too many...

For example, I already played it for 40 hours when it came out without any mods, loved it, but stopped playing after reaching level 20 without finishing...decided to wait for mods and DLC.

Now, 3 DLCs are out, but two more are on their way, and there is so many other mods that are game enhancing..

but then, patch 1.1 broke VATS system, it lags now (it did not lag in 1.0) and it is still not fixed, even with patch 1.5 : /
So basically, I am now waiting for them to :

1)fix VATS (essential, I hate waiting before every shot for percentages to appear)
2)release all the DLC
3)fix those (because they will be broken, it is Bethesda after all)
4)update all the essential mods and texture packs to be compatible with the patches and DLC

So basically I am probably gonna wait another year.

After I patched my game is became a lot more stable. I would often CTD or get a complete freeze requiring reboot, but after 1.5 I have not had a single problem!

I haven't used any mods at all and have now finished the game with 3 characters. Each time it was great fun and discovered new quests each time.

There are some graphics mods but I would sometimes get a little bit of stuttering when the action got going to never bothered to put any more strain on the graphics card.

Give vanilla a whirl then check out the mods and see if any fix any niggles you find.

I dont feel the need to play with any mods in fallout 3. its a lot more complete than oblivion was.

As others have said, best to play through the game without mods then add them to tweak anything thats lacking.

Broken steel would probably be a good purchase as it extends the game, the other 2 dlc, not so much.

Firstly, congrats on buying such a fantastic game! I was always an FPS player or racing game player, so tried this on good reviews and was blown away by the depth amongst other things.

On the latest patch, I still have a delay in VATS, and CTD every half hour, though I think that's a result of a dodgey savegame. In short, there needs to be another patch or two, but it's probably worth getting the latest version since you'll have less bugs overall and a better chance at it being stable.

As above, play through without any mods first.

The only mods I use are the text/window resize one to make the speach and store boxes look less console-y, and one to up the level cap to 30. I forget where I got them though, sorry.

BAH updated to 1.5 ( although the update process did freeze at the end ). The game Freezes a lot. can normally play for about half an hour then it freezes, sound carry's on and i have to alt-tab/ctrl-alt dlt out of it.

Reinstalling and will try it unpatched.

grrr, shame because from what ive played ( reached megaton, talking to the prosy) its very good :D

Been thinking about getting this game myself, disappointing that it seems to crash often. :/

Also, do you need to play the earlier games in the series to understand what happens in Fallout 3?

Not really. It would help, but since your character grew up in a fallout shelter he/she doesnt know anything about the world either.

You playing the ingame radio when playing ?

If so, turn it off, or go to your AC3 filter configuration, system tab, and change ''direct audio renderer'' to ''use wave out as default audio renderer''.
This will also eliminate your radio stutter aside from stopping the freezes ( well it did for me, but it's a known prob).

lol i have so many things to try. Worried it may be my overclock but have had no problems in far cry 2 and crysis warhead, 3dmark 06 e.t.c. all running at maximum settings. In fact no artifacts, crashes ro anything unusual in any application other than fallout 3 :(

Have you tried the ac3 filter fix ?
I was also put off from playing it due to not being able to play the ingame radio, until I found the fix on the net.
