Just bought PS2+ damaged disk?

I've just bought a second hand PS2 and two games (FFXII and FreQuency) from a less known highstreet retailer (40 stores worldwide, so not unknown, but not a massive player either).
Just plugged it all in, stuck FreQuency in the drive and turned it on. Makes some unhappy noises and doesn't read the CD. FFXII is fine, though.

Checked the CD, its not in that good a shape. I'm guessing this would be why it isn't playing. However, I just stuck it into my laptop and in a second it had opened explorer and everything seems fine.
Also, this is a game I've wanted for a while, but never found it in a shop before.

So, assuming the PS2 is having some problems reading the disk because its dirty/slightly scratched, what can I do to try and clean it? Otherwise, I'm going to take it back tomorrow and ask for a refund :(

DVD/CD cleaner (one of those ones that has a little brush on the bottom).

I personally would return it though tbh. I just checked a second hand place online and they have 4 copies of this game for £8 each.
Can't say anymore due to competitor rules.

Had a couple of pre-owned games before from a competitor and had to take them back. I now never buy pre-owned games from that shop or any similar anymore, much rather buy off here or an auction site since people generally say if its scratched to high hell, and they're far cheaper.

I'd advise you get a refund, it will probably be the disk thats the problem. A quick scan shows one for sale on an auction site with 5days left and no bids yet, promo edition (Just disk).

Thanks, I saw that auction one while checking how much the game went online. I was under the impression that it was harder to find than that.

Well, guess there's nothing to do for it except take it back.
One thing is slightly worrying me though. I would have thought they should have checked all preowned games before putting them on the shelf. Could they just turn around and say I damaged it?

Well some games don't bugger up until half way through, so realistically they'd have to complete every game they have so it's easier to sell it broke then expect the customer to come back.

Mmmt, thats true. Still, the fact that the disk loads in my laptop gives me some hope.

I'll spend a few more minutes fiddling with it now, putting the PS2 verticle, things like that. Otherwise I'll take it back.
I know that *Insert other high street retailer* have a service that they claim to repair damaged or scratched disks. Anyone have any experience with this? as depending on how much it costs, I may do this (The online shops that have sold it are charging £8 + P&P. If this cleaning thing works, then it'll be easier and quicker than ordering online, though.

The disc cleaning machine would clean it up a treat, a local independant games shop would offer this service.

Might just be worthwhile to take it back to where you got it from and ask if they clean discs?

Yeah, I'm going to ask the place I bought it from first. I'm hoping they wouldn't charge me, since they sold the duff disk in the first place. Otherwise, one of the very large chains has a wndow flyer saying they clean them.

Well, the saga is not over yet.

Went in, asked about refunds first, and I can only get store credit. Not the end of the world, but slightly annoying. Anyhow, they cleaned the disk, stuck it in one of their display machines and plugged one of the TVs in, and it worked fine. So, I thanked them and went home.
My PS2 still won't read it. So, I'm going to take the non too strenuous leap and assume its the PS2 thats faulty instead. Which is odd since it plays FFXII fine.
Still, I'm going to take the machine and the game back in tomorrow, and ask them to try them together. In a world true and good, it won't work, and I get another machine. Yay for 12 month warentee.

But since the ps2 is playing one game, how could it not be playing this one? Slightly dirty lense preventing it from reading a slightly damaged disk?
