The birdy ones seem a little soft, but this isn't the case with the indoor ones. Odd.
It's because they are are 100% crops and the indoor photos are just resized.

probs because this series of lenses are soft at 300mm
were the keys taken at 300 or only about 200mm, where the lens is much nicer

just purchased a 100-300mm USM
interested to see how they compare, although IS would be really nice!

No. 1 isnt, and even that looks soft to me.

Image 2 is a 100% crop of Image 1 - So looking at the size of image 1 it has been cropped (maybe 70%)

The indoor shot of the keys is at 300mm at 1/60, it is a little soft but proves IS again :)

What focal length were these taken at ATHRoss?

I have pick up one of these lenses too and I find that up to 200mm it is sharp but over that it goes a bit soft. The two examples look nice and crisp.

ouch what are its alternatives? higher and lower £ (but same focal lengths approx)

The Sigma 70-300mm APO DG is pretty good, you can get it for around £120 imported or £160 in the UK. I got mine a few days ago and I'm very please with it.

Zheka took a few motorsport shots with it here.
