I decided to build a futureproof setup ready for crysis and other dx10 games like alan wake, i just hope i made the right choice of components:eek:

I will want to use the system for 1080p hd viewing and 1080 gaming and noob ocing. When i recently read that crysis was running on 2 8800 ultras ,4 gigs of ram, extreme quad cpu to max out the settings on crysis, this is what inspired me to buy this setup:D

I think next year we will see more use made of directx10, and i think we will need cutting edge hardware to enjoy these games at their full potential;)

Heres what i bought :

OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-8500 1066MHz SLI-Ready Edition Dual Channel DDR2 (OCZ2N1066SR2GK) 1 £99.99 (£117.49)

Asus Blitz Formula Special Edition Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard 1 £149.99 (£176.24)

Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 "LGA775 Conroe" 3.00GHz (1333FSB) - Retail 1 £151.99 (£178.59)

Samsung SM-245B 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black 1 £274.99 (£323.11)

Asus GeForce 8800 Ultra HTDP 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail 1 £349.99 (£411.24)

Asus Arctic Square CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/LGA775) 1 £32.99 (£38.76)

Do you recon i will get a hasslefree decent overclock from this setup:confused:

Ta folks;)

It looks good although I'd personally have gone for an 8800GTX instead of the ultra and probably bought a quad core then overclocked it. Everything should work well and overclock nicely though. :)

I agree.

IMO the 8800 ultra's don't offer much more then the 8800GTX's but cost £100 more. Also as you can see from my sig I have gone for the quad core (although I'm gutted I was a bit impatiant to wait for the G0) and will be overclocking it.

But other then that it looks good.:)

its not a bad setup, but you said yourself, they used a quad core...yet you went for dual....when they are the same price near enough...

Again as Semi-Pro-Waster said, swapping for quad, dropping the 8800 Ultra to a GTX and just overclocking the GTX to Ultra Speeds (as that is all the Ultra is)

The Abit Blitz mobo is just a glorified Abit IP35 Pro with no real benefit to your system,

The savings from the mobo and graphics could have then gotten you the 4gb of RAM....

But never the less its a good spec, and you'll definitely be pleased with it, but it seems a bit distant from the spec you mentioned about them playing crysis on...?

Would i have got a lot better performance from a quad core :(

I suppose i can always buy another 2 gigs of ram, and originally i was going to buy a 8800 gtx but not all the gtxs can overclock to ultra speeds.

Also wouldnt i be able to overclock this ultra even further:D

i find it really strange the people ask for opinions "after" they order stuff and not get advice "before" hand

Its called impulsive shopping:D

Anyway i aprecciate your various thoughts and comments and dont regret buying this setup, i could always pretend i had a quad core setup:p

You wouldnt see much of a performance difference "now" with quad, unless, that is you use programs such as Photoshop/Video editing/3D Rendering programs.

But you will see quads coming into their own with more multi threaded games, such as Crysis etc, but thats only 1 game so far (unless you play supreme commander)

Most GTX's would clock to Ultra Speeds and above, there aren't many that I haven't seen clocked to that, and all will come close to it.

Maybe you could send the stuff back under the distance selling act, if you're that desperate, but your system is far from slow, and it will play Crysis fine I assume (until we get a demo no one knows)

And it, as Paulus said, it probably would have been prudent to post this thread before you bought the goods :p

but alas, there are ways around it, as mentioned above

I wonder how much extra performance will be gained from games optimised for quad core in comparison to dual core setups:confused:

So basically an 8800 ultra is a oced gtx:eek:

I doubt there will be games "optimised" for 4 cores over 2 etc, just that games will share the load better across 4 cores than 2, but i estimate this is still a fair way off mainstream. Here is a good comparison article http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/08/08/extreme_fsb_2/ about benefits of dual/quad

And as far as i know, yes the Ultra is just a clocked GTX unless someone can say otherwise? You just pay for the guarantee off the clock speed really

MINUS12

Relax and enjoy your E6850, its an excellent CPU and offers blistering performance for games. From what I have read its also a good overclcoker too, so even more speed. You have a fine system there :)

yes, i agree, it is a fine system.

as it stands that there will always be something better coming out soon so just enjoy what you have.

anyway, im jealous im still on a 3500+/1gig/x800 :(

Could have done better with the money spent there but its too late so i cba to rub it in.

I personally believe the E6850 is just as good a choice as the Q6600 if not better in the current climate. I reckon by the time you need or can actually see the difference between the 2 in a common real world situation (such as gaming) you'll be due an upgrade anyway. Out of the box the E6850 performs better than the quad in...well, see for yourself LINK

You've made a fine choice and i'll be making a similar one shortly. Go and enjoy it and prepare to have your pants soiled after loading up Crysis for the first time later this year :)
