Just build a new computer everything is running brilliantly except i can't go any sound. I have tried updating the sound drivers for realtek digital output. The audio cable for hd audio is on the board. I checked the bios to see if it was disabled but it wasn't.

Is it a fault with the motherboard? The motherboard is an Asus P8 Z77-V LX2.

Have you plugged directly into the motherboard from the back?

What do you mean? Is there a little cable by the sound ports?

All the cables are in the right place. I never got a cable to put in SPDIF-OUT.

It had sound when i first installed the drivers from the disc but it was crackling up.

Then i updated the drivers and the sound stopped working.

There's only green, orange and blue sound ports on the onboard sound. There's no black sound port for the ATAPI Internal ATAPI jack. I know a 3 or 4 pin cable needs to go into the SP/DIF but i never got it with the motherboard.

I didn't think i needed that anyway as i thought it would pick up the sound straight from the hd audio.

He means, are you using the front jacks of your computer or the jacks at the back.

Well if the jacks at the front AND back don't work then it sounds like the onboard sound is broken. Either that or the headphones are kaput :D

Edit: Try going into the playback options by right clicking the sound icon on the bottom right of the task bar and playing sounds through the computer. Does the green bar by the speaker output move?

Check it hasn't defaulted to S/PDIF. Also check it hasn't defaulted to a HDMI audio output.

I checked that and it doesn't show the audio device as hdmi. It's not enabled on the motherboard.

This is my motherboard.

Second faulty motherboard this week. It appears sound is coming from the onboard sound and when stereo mix was enabled it was recognizing the sound from the video.

Well i have two sound cards i could use but i doubt they're compatible.

Got 'Control Panel -> Sound' when there's some music playing. You should see a bar graph moving against one of the sound devices. Is it the correct one?

Yeah. Sound appears to be moving on the bar graph on the default chosen audio device.

It also appears when i enable stereo mix sound is being recognized on that.

Try the sound cards, it could be that you have a wrong setting somewhere if this is the second one

I would have assumed that you had installed the sound drivers for your motherboard already.

Yeah. Of course i did. The sound driver installed was the generic high definition audio codec which windows finds instantly.

I installed the audio drivers from the disc given. Once i installed the realtek high definition audio i checked the realtek hd manager and i saw the speakers had appeared in the manager.

I tried listening to audio but it was crackling up. So i went onto the asus motherboard page for the P8 Z77-V LX2 audio drivers and i downloaded the latest drivers.

I installed the drivers and i restarted my pc. I then had no sound. The speakers weren't appearing in the manager.
