I have just started playing this and it seems quite fun but I don't seem to be able to make much progress. Have completed a mission to take over a power plant but now I seem to be just driving around not really achieving a lot.

I know I'm supposed to be blowing up everything I can but the best weapon I have is an assault rifle which is n't much good for taking down buildings and if I don't destroy the buildings I can't access better weapons and explosives I guess.

Could someone give me a few pointers in what I should do to progress?

Use vehicles to pull stuff over until you have enough money to buy better weapons. To find all the rewards I find it easiest to use my chute and slingshot around an area.

Depends how rigidly you want to follow the game structure to be honest. For me, when I pick up JC2 I'm generally just looking to cause some mayhem 90% of the time. If that's your aim then find a military base and start jacking choppers. Once you've got one you can pretty much fly around the map blowing the crap out of whatever you want (the oil rigs surrounding the islands are great fun) while racking up loads of chaos points to upgrade your weapons. You're right about the assault rifle not destroying bigger structures, in which case your best bet is either a chopper or stealing a mini gun from one of the military bases.

If you're after advancing the game, go after the faction missions. They're on your map as big stars.

Once you get hold of some good chaos points the best guns to upgrade are the assault rifle and twin smg's. Once you get those up to 5* (takes quite a while) they become insanely powerful.

Oh, the only other tip would be not to neglect the black market trader as a means of getting around. Once you've visited somewhere on the map he will take you there more or less instantly and it really cuts down your travel time for the further destinations. The other thing you can do is look for anywhere with a runway as they will house jets, which are very quick for getting around in.
