I have to make a wishlist for xmas and i want to be able to play some games. Please tell me if this is a good upgrade noting i only have £350 - £400 to spend.

current specs:
CPU: Intel Pentium E5300 @ 2.60GHz
Ram: 4.0GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 400MHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. G41M-ES2L (Socket 775)
Graphics :Generic PnP Monitor @ 1680x1050
DELL 1704FPT @ 1280x1024
256MB GeForce 7600 GT

Graphics: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-136-OK&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1502

PSU: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-149-AN&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=

Would this work then?

Also what sort of games would this handle if i overclocked the cpu a little bit.

clock that cpu...should get 3.0 easy enough if your mobo can take it
new gpu is good value
PSU seems ok too although I'm not a PSU knowledge base :p

Looks very nice.

I would probably go with this PSU instead - it is still good quality, provides more than enough power and saves you £30.

You may also want to consider buying a second-hand Q6600 (~£80) and selling the E5300 (~£25) - so a total cost of ~£55. Since more and more games are making use of quad core CPUs, this would be a solid upgrade for gaming.

The GPU you picked is a hell of a deal - buy it quick before they run out at that price.

oh ok thanks but my parents don't like buying second hand computer parts so i'll stick with overclocking it. Ima gunna be happy this christmas!

edit: what games would this handle?

The 5870 has a dual slot cooler and is 10.5 inches long - it is a long card, so make sure you measure your case before pressing the "buy" button.

As for what games it will handle - I would say most current games. However, there will be a few that pretty much require quad cores that won't play too well (GTA 4 and ARMA2 for example).

It does need 2 connectors, however he means that the cooler takes up an extra slot on the motherboard, so whichever PCI/PCIE slot is beneath it won't be usable.

Ok, good to hear about the case - it looks like it should be big enough, though I would definitely get a tape measure out before buying anything, just to confirm. I can't find anywhere on the web where it says what the longest graphics card it can take is.

As for dual slot - that this just the cooler - it takes up the space of the primary slot and the slot next to it. However, the card is only installed into a single PCIe x16 slot on the motherboard. Due to the power requirement of the card, it does indeed need two 6pin power connectors.

ah ok i will go ahead and buy it then, also just so you know i did take a tape measure out and measure it, i had about an inch maybe and inch and a half left of room. Also one last question i just thought of, the mother board only has one pci express port, does it matter if it covers any other things? ie there is a blue thingy there then all the rest underneath it are two slightly smaller and kind of a beigy colour. is that fine?
