Just (eventually) got my 360 today but ...

Thing is you dont have to buy one - just get one of the linksys or netgear ones.

I invested a few years ago and got a mate who worked for a cabling company to wire my house up with RJ45 sockets. Got one in most rooms. Best thing I ever did to be honest. Wireless is still way too flakey for my liking for anything more than browsing the web.

I will stick to offline I think ;)

Might as well take your 360 back to the shops then. In my opinion it's all about playing over Live!

Sure it's a great standalone console but playing over Live! adds so much more and will make your games last so much longer.

So any USB wireless card will work then ?
I don't know how the 360 goes about drivers etc, I assumed it had to have the official one to work ?

As for Wyrdo's comment, all I can say is its a games console, it should have engaging and varied single player games, if it has to rely on online play, thats not a good sign ;)
Its a nice feature to have, and will add longetivity to the games, but first and foremost, IMO, it should be a good standalone gaming platform.

OK so will this usb adaptor work on the 360:

Netgear WG111 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter (NW-026-NG)

And in conjunction with this:

Netgear WGR614 54Mbps Wireless Cable DSL Router (NW-010-NG)

Should go through a floor and a solid (not studwork) wall or 2 over a distance of around 9M point to point ?

These are very good and are more than plenty fast enough. i know a site where i got mine for 50 quid but i think its a competitor so :/

You'll want a wireless ethernet bridge for guaranteed compatibility with the 360...I doubt Microsoft will provide drivers for any more than their own wireless sticks.

I am not overly impressed with it just yet, kinda looks fuzzy and not too sharp in game, maybe cos its not on a HDTV ?

I don't think it helps its through composite leads/scart adaptor either, have ordered the Joytech RGB, S-video and Optical audio all in one cable, hopfully that will make things much sharper until I can afford a HDTV ?

If your TV has RGB capability, then you MUST get a RGB lead asap, the 360 looks almost like an xbox 1 without one imo. I have the official RGB lead and it made a massive difference, but I recently got a HDTV which turns the console into something spectectular, even with these frist gen titles!

Online is handy too, but if you like rpg's then just buy a RGB lead and Oblivion(Elder Scrolls 4, and single player) and you will be glued to the screen.

Righto ... now whats one of those :o

As someone mentioned it needn't be the MS usb netcard, thats why I asked :)

Well it does, but that scart is tied up, but I can go through my AV amp in s-video, that generally looks the best on my TV, so hopefully it will with the xbox.

Your NTL modem should have a RJ45 socket on it. If you buy a router(there should be a socket called internet), you then have a network cable(RJ45 lead) from your modem to the router. Then have a RJ45 cable from your PC to the router, then a RJ45 cable from your 360 to the router.

That much I understand, but its going to be a royal pain to run a Cat5 cable from router to xbox, hence why I was looking at wireless untill I saw how much M$ charge for just the usb card .... Sagalout/Phil99 mentioned you can use other makes, but the drivers situation was what crossed my mind ...

Yep, wireless is expensive... To give you an idea of what live offers run a cable for a while. Wireless routers tend to come with at least four RJ45 inputs, so when your ready to go wireless your router will be cabable :)

Eh? These are freely availible now unless I haven't read it properly.

Thats catalogues for ya! I can't afford to get one outright, but tenner a week and no interest is no problem. In ordered it at the beginning of december and it should have arrived in the middle of february but they kept putting the date forward.

Finger crossed it will be here this time.

They mean you can get a wireless bridge that plugs into the ethernet (LAN) port on the 360. You can't use USB as that would require drivers.

Like these: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Wireless_Ethernet_Bridges.html

Is it true that the comp lead that comes standard with a 360 premium is poo and blurry? Cos i have mine hooked up that way and assumed it was cos its on an old(er) SDTV rather than a HD set, Is it worth ordering one then?

If it's anything like Composite vs RGB on PS2 (and there's no reason for it not to be): HELL YES! :D

Well I had hoped to be able to give an answer to that Ultra_Extreme, but the place I ordered from screwed up my order, I should have had the cable yesterday, now it looks like Saturday after they delayed a day doing nothing, then after I phoned and was assured it would be sent yesterday, I checked progress and they have sent me train similator 2006 for the PC instead !! like I really want that lol.
Needless to say another call followed, and I have been assured they will send it next day tommorow so I should get it saturday ... then I will tell you :)

BTW, Re networking, as i understand it, I can get a wireless acsess point for the console, and wireless router hooked to modem and that should work ?
Assuming it will travel 9M through a wall and up a floor :o

ta m8

RE wireless, i use the M$ wless network adapter with a netgear modem/router through 15-20m of 19th century hotel masonry and i get nigh on flawless Live! play on a 2mb con

Ok cable arrived, and true to form for the rest of the order, it was the wrong one !

I ordered the one with optical audio cable, RGB scart and Svideo connectors, and got the HD one with svideo and optical, Although I would have hooked it via svideo anyway, it would have been nice to compare to RGB

Anyhow, using Svideo the image is much crisper and clearer than composite, its worth the £12 for the cable easy :)

I can't but help hanker for a HDTV now though, to get that higher res etc :o
Have seen an unknown 32" WS brand using an LG panel for a tad over £700, which sounds a good price, and user reviews seem very favourable .... but unless anyone has a dead cert for the 3.45 at newmarket at nice odds I am SOL ;)

Nope, im not online with it, and i think its a stonking console, only thing i can see from live is everyone trying to outdo each other with the big gamer scores, im not playing the games for the gamer scores, and to show everyone else how big it is (ohh errr), i play for the enjoyment of the games, not just soi can drop me keks and say 'what do you think of that gamer score eh'. :D

RGB's better than S-Vid.
