you are drip fed everything in FFXIII for the first 13 or so hours, it seems long winded but its required as the battle system is great (rest of the game is meh!) and quite complex if you want to use it to its full potential.
you level up on the sphere grid and each character is based on a specific roll although you can learn most things for each character on each role it cost a lot more if you dont stick to there preferred ones.
unfortunatly FFXIII was one of the biggest dissapointment for me this generation, great battle system, stupid story, far too linear and not many likeable characters (in fact you'll end up despising a couple atleast)

sure it was a bit aimless at times and the summons were crap, but you got the feeling you were just a little part of the games vast world and I liked that aspect of it.
it's all flash and nothing underneath.
