finished my first build this week. thank you to everyone that helped me choose components and gave me advice, it was much appreciated.
this is what i ended up with-

coolermaster elite 430 black windowed case
phenom 11 x4 965 be cpu
asus m4a88td-v evo/usb3 mobo
4gb corsair ddr3 1600MHz xms3 ram
antec truepower new modular 650w psu
hd 5850 1gb gpu
samsung spinpoint f3 1tb hdd(will get another one soon)

i have everything up and running now with no problems thanks to all your advice, i just have a question about the PSU.

at the moment i am using all the hard-wired cables to connect everything, but i was wondering if there is any difference in performance with using the modular cables as i think i could tidy it up a bit if i used some of them. for example, at the moment i have the hard wired cables powering my mobo + cpu (obviously can't change those, no problem) and also the sata power cables going to the hdd and odd, a molex going to a fan at the top, and the pci cable going to the gpu.

will there be a difference if used the attachable cables supplied to go to the gpu, hdd and odd, and hid the hard-wired cable away somewhere?

btw, i kind of wish i'd paid a bit more and got a better case. it's not bad but not great for cable management.

thank you.

if the case isn't that spacious in the first place you may want to hold off adding further cables to the rig cluttering up the air flow unless the fixed cables would be completely out of the way of any cooling... you could end up overheating your nice new rig

also if the case is within 1 month old of been brand new isn't it possible to send it back to get a different case?
i actually spent a lot of time choosing my case before getting it, i did a lot of research and found for the HAF 922 been the best for space for upgrades/expansions, space for cooling and the best in price for all them needs, it is also the best in many other areas, i've actually made another post somewhere on this site regarding all the benefits, you could say i wrote a full review on it, believe me it's an awsome case... just search for haf 922....

i did find that it was only overclockers that made it the best towards price for been £70-£80

thanks guys probably leave them then although it doesn't look great in there.

another thing, the cpu's stock cooler seems a bit loud, any recommendations for an alternative?
also, i have the fan xpert program with this mobo, what do you think are the best settings. i mean for idle, gaming etc. i have been leaving it on all night whilst i am downlaoding a load of steam games (280gb so far!) cpu temp after this is about 30 degrees in the morning, does the fan need to run high if the temp is this low? would cut down the noise.
cheers.

nothing you can do about the stock cooler, mine was loud last summer, took it off and replaced with a fat heatsink with a bigger/slower fan.

any recommendations for a cpu cooler?
would be nice if it was quiet. bear in mind that the RAM slots are very close to the cpu but i could cope with one of them being covered. also, i have an exhaust fan just above the cpu cooler, would the new cooler affect this? would i need to change the fan layout?
cheers
Would look to spend between £20-£30 and will OC soon

forgive me for maybe a stupid question but i am new to this.
obviously my stock cooler faces straight out towards the side panel. do these fans point in a different direction? to the rear maybe? (never used one)
Do they, for instance, negate the need for one of the other fans, rear exhaust or top exhaust?

the pictures do not make it clear which way they are oriented?

cheers.

keep any fans in the case.

if you have a fan in the roof blowing up and out, great.

if you have one at the back of the case blowing backwards. good too.

These performance heatsinks, will probably all face downwards, due to the AM3 socket mounting holes not being square, so rotating the mounting brackets wont be possible.

thats a titan fenrir ver2.0 on a AMD AM3 setup, its not possible to rotate the cooler.

Mate, there's no such thing as a stupid question imho :).

Aftermarket coolers tend to have fans on the side, which usually push or pull air across the cooling fins and out towards the rear of your case.

Normally you will still need to have the other fans as they facilitate airflow through your case (e.g. not just your cpu cooler) and will help move hot air away from other components such as chipsets and hard-drives etc.
